Local Artist at Dream Caf Now through Thanksgiving, the Dream Caf will be featuring the works of local artist Sonia Hunt. Originally from London, England, Sonia has lived in the US for over 30 years and is now living in Lewes. Sonia loves to travel and to try to capture some of the places she visits. The watercolors on display at the Dream Caf range from a depiction of an exotic olive market in Morocco, to a courtyard in Spain, to a dune on Rehoboth Beach. She says she likes the unpredictability of watercolor, which demands a spontaneity of approach unique to the medium. Sonia is a member of the Rehoboth Art League and the Bethany Beach Watercolor Society. The Dream Caf is located at 26 Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach. They can be reached at 302-226-CAFE. Artist Debbie Wells Returns to Peninsula Gallery in Lewes Regular attendees of the Peninsula Gallery's monthly exhibitions will probably remember the technicolor landscapes of Debbie Wells which were featured in July last year. So successful was that exhibition that gallery owners Carol and Tony Boyd-Heron decided to break their own rules and invite the artist to return in 2000. This exhibit, entitled "Moon Shadow," will feature all new works painted within the past year, but more reflective of the changing seasons. In fact the artist says that early in the year she was working in a more controlled style and palette, exploring new color combinations and compositional ideas. Smooth flowing lines and a limited range of color yielded pieces with a quiet austerity, reminiscent of the winter months As the summer unfolded, the mood lightened up, taking on an almost tropical feel at times with bright colors, loose brushwork and suns, instead of moons, as the trademark. "I think people will almost sense the seasons progress as they view the whole body of work", she says. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Wells now lives in the Outer Banks where she paints full time. She strives to create a very personal and individual interpretation of the world around her. She is continually inspired and challenged by the beauty of the vast marshlands, the rural landscapes and the bustling waterfronts that surround her. She takes these settings and tries to convey a sense of mystery in her interpretation of them. She exaggerates form, line and especially color. She juxtaposes complementary colors and lights and darks for dramatic effect, using a lot of opaque pigments and applying the paint in thick, expressive strokes. The result is stunning. The Peninsula Gallery is located on the first floor of the Beacon Motel, just across the canal on Savannah Road in Lewes. The Wells exhibit will run through October 29.
