CAMP Meeting Set for November 4th The first fall meeting of the CAMP Rehoboth Advisory Committee will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9:00 a.m. until noon at Epworth United Methodist Church on Baltimore Avenue. Lunch will be served immediately following the meeting. Much of the work of this meeting will revolve around plans for the new CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project, as well as reports on our support groups, CAMPsafe, and The Women's Project of CAMP Rehoboth. "This is where much of the creative work of CAMP Rehoboth is being done," said Murray Archibald. "It's exciting to see the progress we've made in the last year, and challenging to see what we have coming up in the future." "We are in the process of inviting as many local gay groups and organizations as possible to send representatives to this meeting," said Dan Goren, one of the co-chairs of the Community Center Project. "One of the major purposes of the meeting is to receive input from the community at large and organizations in the surrounding communities." Meetings of the Advisory Committee are open and participation by the community is encouraged. Please call Kathy, 302-227-5620 for lunch reservations. SCAC Names Steve Twilley As New Executive Director The Board of Directors of Sussex Country AIDS Committee recently announced the hiring of its new Executive Director, Steve Twilley. The post was left vacant when Greg Kenyon resigned earlier in the year because he felt he could not devote the time needed to the job, and care for his home bound mother. Steve comes to SCAC with an extensive background in non-profit program management, public relations, marketing, fundraising and community affairs. Prior to accepting the position at SCAC he was Director of Public Relations and Development for Delmarva Rural Ministries in Dover. At the October SCAC Board meeting where the announcement of Steve's hiring was made, four new Board members were also electedTom Negran, Paul Camacho, John Furbush and Rev. Tom Bohache, pastor of the local Metropolitan Community Church (MCC). Millennium Holiday Ornament Offered for Sale by SCAC Again this year, the Sussex County AIDS Committee is selling beautiful and collectable holiday ornaments to support its client services programs. This year's edition features the sparkling Millennium Star of Hope. The ornament is solid brass with a 24-karat gold finish and brightly colored enamels. The center of the star has five interlocking red ribbons, the international symbol of AIDS awareness. Suspended from a red ribbon, the ornament comes ready to hang. Individual ornaments sell for $15 and are attractively boxed for holiday giving. Each piece is carefully crafted and suitable for personal holiday decorating or as a gift. All proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go to support SCAC's services to those in Sussex County who live with HIV/AIDS. According to SCAC Executive Director Steve Twilley, "The number of individuals and families served by our emergency financial assistance, transportation, food, and outreach programs continues to grow. The ornaments offer an excellent way to support these programs, as well as a symbol of the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS and a touching tribute to those whose lives have been affected by this disease." Orders for the Millennium Star of Hope ornament may be made by calling SCAC at 302-644-1090 or stopping by the SCAC administrative office at 107 South Street, Rehoboth, Delaware. For a nominal fee, orders may be mailed. Ornaments are also available for purchase at several locations throughout Sussex County including Abizak's, Bayberry Flowers, Beach Tans & Hair Design, Blockbuster Video, Cloud 9 Restaurant, Insight and the CAMP Rehoboth office in Rehoboth Beach, Saxon Swan in Lewes, St. Martha's Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach and Act II Florist in Seaford. World AIDS Day Schedule for Rehoboth Beach Observance World AIDS Day is traditionally observed each December 1, and this year is no exception. Activities are being planned throughout the area. In Rehoboth Beach, the observance will be centered around a Candlelight Procession down Rehoboth Avenue which will end at Epworth United Methodist Church on Baltimore Avenue with a Service of Remembrance and Hope. This year's event, which is still being planned, will start with a gathering at the Rehoboth bandstand for a short program at 6:00 p.m., and the Candlelight Procession begins at 6:30 p.m. The Service of Remembrance and Hope starts at 7:00 p.m. and will include the reading of the names of friends and family who have died of AIDS. Afterwards, a light supper will be served compliments of the Blue Moon and Subway restaurants. The next planning meeting will be Wednesday, October 25, at 6:00 p.m. at the SCAC office on South Street. If you would like to volunteer to help at the event or get involved in planning the program, call Murray Archibald at CAMP Rehoboth, 302-227-5620, or Steve Twilley at SCAC, 302-644-1090. Belle of Amherst comes to Georgetown's Possum Hall Wilmington College and Possum Point Players will present the one-woman show on the life of poet Emily Dickinson, The Belle of Amherst. Starring Patsy Felthousen, Belle will be performed on October 21st at Possum Hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 each or $25 for a backers ticket which includes a champagne reception prior to the show and seats in a "reserved seating" area. The Belle of Amherst is full of passion, poetry and heart, just like Ms Dickinson's poetry. It delicately explores the life of America's greatest woman poet at various stages in her experience from the age of 15, when she was full of hope and success, until she died at 56, a virtual recluse with her door closed against society. Her life is recreated with liberal excerpts from her poetryand by the method of her playing the roles of her father, teacher and friends. Julie Harris played the role on Broadway to great acclaim and won the 1977 Tony Award as best actress. Reservations are required and may be secured by calling the Possum Point Players' ticketline at 302-856-4560. |
