LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Speak Out |
I really enjoyed Tom Minnuto's June 15 column, the "Tosca's Kiss Reference Guide." It's not often that an author gets to see some of his more obscure references (e.g., "Bancroft" for "Robinson") ferreted out correctly.
Yes, I am "Tyler Colby." Enough people seem to know my real identity that there doesn't seem to be much point in keeping it a secret anymore. I live in Washington, and have been a beach regular for a number of years (although not this summer). As you accurately point out, this is a work of FICTION. While it is amusing to try to figure out the similarities in the characters and real people, it really is true that none of the people in the book are thinly disguised residents of Rehoboth. To the extent that the people and dialog "ring true," it indicates the book's success as a work of fiction. To put it another way: "Pete Sweet" is NOT Chris Riss! I hope everyone enjoys Tosca's Kiss in the spirit in which it was intended, as mindless enjoyable beach trash. Have a great summer! John Feather, Washington, D.C. On Saturday, August 11, Rehoboth Beach voters will elect 2 members of the City Commission. Because there are 2 openings and 3 candidates, each of us can vote for 2 candidates. We urge voters to cast one of their votes for incumbent Richard Sargent. For six years Rich has served on the City Commission. While there is still much work to be done in Rehoboth Beach, most of us know that things have improved very much over the past several years here. As the City continues to attract more new homeowners and a more diverse population, Rich has played a key role in reaching out to many of us on preserving the charm of Rehoboth Beach. Rich's interest in helping us has not just been in words, but also in deeds. In the past few years, we have faced neighborhood needs as well potential zoning issues that could have adversely changed the nature of our current neighborhoods. These situations were unrelated, but Rich's actions in each were consistently the same: he was the only member of the City Commission who initiated contact with us, asked for more details, proposed meeting with us and our neighbors who shared our particular concerns, visited many of our homes and inspected the streetscapes, and then championed our issues with the City. While we have found many City officials to be responsive on various matters over the years, we can truly say that none has gone the extent to which Rich has gone for us. Rich worked hard for all of usfull-time and part-time residents, gay and straight, old and young, female and male. Rehoboth Beach is going to face more difficult issues in the coming years, for example, zoning and land use issues (like protecting residential areas from more traffic and commercial encroachments), and reform of the absentee ballot process (so it is less cumbersome to vote absentee). If you want a strong, responsive member of the City Commission who wants to hear from all of usand whose record is one of inclusivenessand who will not be afraid to pursue these issues, we urge you to cast one of your 2 votes for Rich Sargent.
