LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |

On the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, I received an e-mail from Dave Hastings in Gulfport, Florida. He explained that "Yahoo tracks the number of times the weather for a given city is e-mailed under its 'most e-mailed weather' icon at the bottom of any weather detail page." On the Thursday before Memorial Day, he went on to explain, "Rehoboth Beach was the number two city worldwidebehind London and followed by several major international cities." This concern about the forecast didn't seem to scare off too many visitors, however, and "come rain or come shine" everyone seemed to be enjoying the opening of beach houses, the reunion of old friends, and the official first day of summer CAMP! The most exciting new project on the CAMP calendar is the unveiling of the plans for the Founder's Circle and five year capital building fund of the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project at a gala event on June 2 in the new Atlantic Sands Ballroom on Baltimore Avenue. Whether as a Member or Friend, or at one of the higher levelswhere you can also have your name or the name of a loved one inscribed on a brick, a tile, a door or a roomthe Founder's Circle provides a way for everyone to become a permanent part of the foundation of the Community Center. If you can't join us at the June 2 event and are interested in becoming a member of the Founder's Circle, stop by the office and pick up a copy of the new Founder's Circle brochureor simply call, and we'll be glad to send it to you. With Memorial Day over, the big fourth of July weekend will be here before we know it. This year, the fourth falls midweek, so much of the Rehoboth celebrating will take place on the weekend before the holiday. Love 2001, the huge annual dance benefit at the Rehoboth Convention Center is set for Saturday, June 30, with proceeds going to Sussex County AIDS Committee, CAMP Rehoboth, The Women's Project of CAMP Rehoboth, and Rehoboth Beach Main Street. There's still time to sign up to be a Love Sponsor or Hostjust fill out the form on page 23 of this issue and drop it by the CAMP office. Also make plans Fourth of July weekend, to join Rehoboth Beach Main Street for their big fireworks display on Sunday, July 1 at Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk. Closer on the calendar, is the annual Blue Moon Bachelor Auction to benefit Love 2001. Set for Saturday, June 16, Chris Riss and Tom Minnuto promise another sexy and fun filled eventand they have high hopes of topping last year's record breaking $20,000. And while you're making plans for June, don't miss the always fabulous Gay Men's Chorus benefit concert at the Rehoboth Convention Center on Saturday, June 23. The Chorus is joined once again by special guests The Rainbow Chorale of Delaware. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., with a cash bar available, and the concert begins at 8:00 p.m. and benefits Sussex County AIDS Committee. It has been interesting to me to watch Rehoboth grow over the years. Murray and I first starting coming here a little over twenty years ago. We've watched the Renegade and the Blue Moon pass their twentieth anniversaries. We watched the rise and fall of the now legendary Strand. We've seen businesses come and go. We've danced and laughed and cried and buried friends and made new ones. This year we will celebrate the fourteenth Sundance, the eleventh year of CAMP Rehoboth, the seventh Love, the ninth year of The Beach Book, our twenty-third anniversary, and so on and on. Rehoboth has become a part of our lives, and we of it. Memorial Day weekend always has a way of reminding me of our many years of being connected to Rehoboth. It was wonderful to see everyone again. It feels like another great summer. |
