transFORMations at the Moon
On Saturday, July 7, the Blue Moon will present the opening reception for Murray Archibald's new show titled transFORMations. The show, featuring all new paintings, will run through the end of July. "The Blue Moon show has become a tradition for me," says the artist. "I've been painting shows for the Blue Moon since 1984." Also a part of that tradition is Murray's SUNDANCE painting, this year the show's title piece, called transFORMation. On view as part of the show, the painting will be auctioned at the annual Labor Day event, SUNDANCE 2001. Prints of the painting will be available later in the summer with 100% of the proceeds going to SUNDANCE. "transFORMations is about the way our lives are changed by the patterns around us," Murray says, "it's about the way change happens in our worldit's about evolution. We are all," he says, "living in change, and yet sometimes it's impossible for us to see it. We are all living in patternswe create patterns, we are created by patterns." transFORMations is full of the bold, bright, graphic shapes and colors that have characterized Murray's work in recent years. "Each year is a little different," he says, "but to me they all flow together. Sometimes I circle back and pick up something I did in the past, but put together in a different way it becomes new again." transFORMations opens at the Blue Moon on July 6, the reception is Saturday, July 7, from 2-4 p.m. The show will continue through the end of the month. Chris Burkett Returns to Lewes The Edward Carter Gallery of Lewes announces that Christopher Burkett will be returning to Lewes for the opening of his exhibition Nature's Grace on Friday, July 6, 2001 from 4-7 p.m. The public is warmly invited to attend the opening reception. This show will feature some creative new work that has not previously been exhibited. Christopher is currently working on his next book, which will consist of his best work done with his Hasselblad camera throughout the last 21 years. Many of these images will be shown in this exhibition. Burkett photographs the Earth untouched by man, a wilderness he describes as "of indescribable beauty and wonder, a world filled with light and peace." One of the rare color photographers who makes his own prints, Burkett has originated his own advanced printing techniques, using multiple-stage masking that allows him to control extreme contrasts and produce color prints of unrivaled beauty. His finished photographs are so remarkably detailed, as well as saturated with intensely true hues, that many actually gasp with astonishment when in their presence. Christopher's photographs truly are a reflection of "Nature's Grace". They are images of the soul conveying the hope and inspiration that is nature's gift. The Burkett photography exhibition opens July 1 and will remain on view through July 31st. The Edward Carter Gallery is located at The Inn at Canal Square, 122 Market Street, Lewes. 302-644-7513. The show will be visible all up and down the boardwalk and shore from Dewey Beach to north of Rehoboth. On Sunday July 1, there will be a pre-show celebration on the boardwalk with a WAVE radio DJ playing your favorite oldies, followed by the Chesapeake Brass Band. There will be clearly marked parking lots on Route One. Buses will make continuous loops through the lots, taking passengers downtown and returning them to their cars following the fireworks. The event will be held on Friday July 6th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is a nominal $5. The Cultured Pearl has generously agreed to provide appetizers and a cash bar will be available. A highlight of the event will be the presentation of a campaign check to Mark Aguirre, a candidate for Rehoboth Beach City Commissioner. The DLF seeks to survey candidates in Delaware political races, endorse those who support equal and civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons, announce these candidates in a voter guide, and make financial contributions to their campaigns. The DLF raised over $15,000 last year and has contributed most of these funds to Delaware candidates. LOVE StorySeven Years of Dancing Since 1995, the LOVE dance benefit at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center has been an important part of the Rehoboth summer fund raising season. Over the years, the event has generated important funds for many different organizations, as well as being one the most spectacular parties of the beach season. Created by George Domurot, who also produced the event for the first couple of years, LOVE was originally conceived as a project to involve the Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Rehoboth communities in a fund raising activity. "Rehoboth is where those communities come together to play in the summertime," says CAMP Rehoboth's Kathy Weir, "and where we get a lot of our support." That wide area of support is the reason that LOVE has been such a success over the years. Originally an all AIDS fund raiser, the event has been expanded over the last few years to benefit a broader community base. "It's very important," says LOVE co-chair Mark Aguirre, "that we remember the important contributions of the women's community and that we give something back to the larger community as well." Aguirre and co-chair Bill Alldredge have worked hard to make this year's LOVE the best yet. The event gets underway Saturday night June 30, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center when LOVE 2001 cranks into high gear with over 1000 energized and tanned revelers taking in the lights and sounds of one of the most exciting charity dance parties on the Mid-Atlantic Coast. For the seventh consecutive year the Fourth of July holiday weekend plays host to the charity event that this year benefits the Sussex County AIDS Committee (50%), CAMP Rehoboth (30%), The Women's Project of CAMP Rehoboth(10%), and Rehoboth Beach Main Street(10%). Last year's event raised over $40,000 for event charities and the LOVE Benefit Committee that chooses each years beneficiaries hopes to exceed that amount this year. With music by DJ Darryl Strickland, lighting by Paul Turner, and an open bar provided by sponsors Absolut, Bud Light, Pepsi, and Pride Water, LOVE 2001 will once again transform the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center into a state-of-the-art dance club. Lighting and special effects gurus are promising a new twist to this year's event with a "dramatic special surprise" during the dance, sure to have everyone talking the next day. In addition to ticket sales, money raised for LOVE 2001 comes from sponsorship and host packages for businesses and individuals wanting to make more of a contribution than just a single ticket purchase. Host and sponsorship contributions range from $100 to $500 and up, with these contributors receiving tickets to the event, T-shirts, gifts and a special "thank you" and pre-fireworks cocktail party at the home of Scollay Petry and Mickey MacIntyre on the Sunday evening following the event. Tickets for LOVE 2001 are $35 in advance or $45 at the door and are available through Lambda Rising Bookstores in Washington, Baltimore and Rehoboth Beach or at the CAMP Rehoboth office. Tickets can also be charged by phone through Box Office Tickets at 800-494-TIXS (8497). Host or sponsorship packages are available at CAMP Rehoboth at 302-227-5620. We have a wonderful blend of old and new, large and small, classic and contemporary Rehoboth cottages. Each is complemented by the owner's creative decoration, unique collections, and wonderful artwork," commented Gail J. Shaffer, Chair of this year's tour. Connection in Rehoboth Beach has chosen the Children's Beach House and the Michael W. Brossette Memorial Fund as Partners in their 2001-2002 Corporate Giving Program, which provides financial assistance to charitable organizations in the community. L.A. Connection's Corporate Giving Program is designed to identify two worthwhile charitable programs each year that will receive a predetermined percentage of the annual sales from the store. "Though we recently purchased the business, L.A. Connection has been part of the Rehoboth community for almost ten years. Giving back to the community is important to us," says co-owner Jeff Stroble. "We chose these two Partners because both are important to the community of Rehoboth," explains Dave Collins, the other co-owner. "The Michael W. Brossette Memorial Fund provides emergency financial assistance to individuals at a time in their lives when they really need to put their energy into far more important matters. The Children's Beach House has been doing great work for children in Delaware who need extra support, guidance, and help. Both organizations make our community a better place to live and are deserving of support." L.A. Connection, in the second block of Rehoboth Avenue, is an eclectic store that carries over 50 brands of watches, as well as unique clothing and enchanting gift items. |
