LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Speak Out |
Dear sorority sisters at CAMP Rehoboth,
I just had to get out of Paris for a while and am visiting a young fellow in Geneva for the weekend. I look forward to my much celebrated return to Rehoboth next weekend. I understand that the town is anxiously awaiting the first press release for the much anticipated "High School Homecoming" party August 11th from 9 to 12PM and rightfully so! This year those boys from Baltimore and beyond (previously of 208 Rodney and "Viva Las Vegas") are preparing their new campus at 515 School Ln. for a evening expected to be more fun than chili-mac day at the cafeteria and a cancelled gym class put together! There is sure to be no expense spared when it comes to crepe paper, pompoms and pastel tuxedos. Pep rallies, bake sales, car washes and balloon ascensions are just a hint of the exciting lead up celebrations. Alumni and teachers as well as athletic teams, choirs and wanna be prom queens from surrounding school districts are encouraged to come. "Special" students are also welcome (and MANY are expected). So dust off those soccer cleats, order a corsage from Super G and jump on the next float. School's out for summer and there are precious and few parties that can color your world like this one. Like a knight in white satin it will take you on a stairway to heaven to a bogie wonderland where you may find yourself in muskrat love. Fell free to use this as you'd like. I can't wait to see you all. Ms. Shirley Worthette (aka Cliff) Homecoming Events Coordinator Thanks to all who made this year's benefit concert by the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC and the Rainbow Chorale of Delaware such a wonderful and uplifting event. This was the fourth time that the GMCW has appeared in Rehoboth and again they generously performed so that concert proceeds could benefit the Sussex County AIDS Committee's client services. Though the clouds occasionally poured outside, it was a perfect evening inside the convention center. The powerful feeling of family and shared purpose among the sold-out audience was absolutely electric. And the voices...oh, the voices! All singing in perfect harmony, often with a wink and a grin, and sometimes even a tear. Their songs moved us to laugh, perhaps weep, but always cheer and applaud. On behalf of SCAC, I extend my special thanks to musical director Jeff Buhrman and the members of the GMCW and to musical director Elliot Jones and the Rainbow Chorale for sharing their amazing voices and energy with us that evening. Thanks to GMCW's Dean Lester and SCAC Board's John Speicher for coordinating housing for the Chorus members, for the many hosts who opened their homes and hearts for the weekend, and to Alan and George for their hospitality on Sunday. Thanks to John Furbush, Fay Jacobs, and Charlie Allen for recruiting program advertisers and sponsors. And the Blue Moon, Caf Sol, Keyboardamerica, Bayberry Flowers, and WSCL-FM for their generous support. Thanks to Sharyn Warwick in the SCAC office for keeping things so organized and managing the many volunteer needs for the evening. And thanks to all the many wonderful volunteers who sold and took tickets, handed out programs, served dinner to the Chorus, and made sure the evening went smoothly. And lastly, a very special thank you to Steve Elkins, Murray Archibald, and Kathy Weir at CAMP Rehoboth for all their support and hard work to make this year's concert such a celebration. Their answer was always yes, even before I could make the request. They are all very special...but we all know that. Ours is a community of wonderful friends and supporters. Together, we do wonderful things. Steve Twilley, Executive Director Sussex County AIDS Committee LIVE. DANCE. LOVE. Three small, one syllable words that have been assembled to symbolize what a multitude of words might never be able to express; a coming together of our community once again on a 4th of July holiday weekend to celebrate life, remember a struggle, and look toward the future. Saturday night's LOVE 2001 is more than just a dance party, it is a fun and entertaining way for every one of us to make a real difference in someone else's life. The two main beneficiaries of this year's event are on the front lines everyday working to educate and improve the lives of people affected by HIV / AIDS here in Sussex County. Imagine what life would be like in Rehoboth Beach for all of us without the Sussex County Aids Committee or CAMP Rehoboth. Without their tireless efforts all of our lives would be very, very different. The Women's Project and Rehoboth Beach Main Street work to make a difference in other important parts of our community. The Women's Project is beginning its second year of providing special programs that bring attention to women's issues. Rehoboth Beach Main Street is credited for bringing fireworks back to Rehoboth during the Fourth of July holiday. But, they are also responsible for many other efforts that help our city reach its potential. For a few hours on Saturday night we can all give these community organizations and their volunteers the greatest of compliments; simply by purchasing a ticket to the event and having a great time we will help fund their efforts for yet another year. As the co-chairs of this year's LOVE Benefit, it has been our unbelievable honor and privilege to help make a contribution to these efforts. The focus has been to help create an entertaining evening and raise as much awareness and funds for these causes as possible. Without volunteers giving hundreds of hours of their time and hundreds of individual hosts and sponsorship contributors from throughout the community, we would not have been able to live up to the high expectations for this event. Many individuals gave of their time, money, resources and talents to make our jobs enjoyable and much easier. Without the guidance of Steve Elkins and Murray Archibald and the patience of Kathy Weir at CAMP Rehoboth, we would not be able to get this event done. Uncountable hours on their part make this event not just possible, but remarkable. Rob Dick and Chris Riss did another record breaking job with the Blue Moon Bachelor Auction, raising over $26,000 this year. They make it look easy, but we all know better. Rob not only made a tremendous contribution to the event itself but went the extra mile as one of the bachelors at this year's auction. He and his staff went well beyond the call of duty and we cannot even begin to thank them enough. And what would LOVE be without Tom Minnuto selling tickets and passing out palm cards and flyers to virtually everyone in Rehoboth? Unthinkable. A very special thanks goes to Sondra Arkin and Mary Beth Ramsey at ProMarket; Drew Mitchell and Anne Morris at Fathom Creative; and Fred Griffin at Griffin Graphics for their help with marketing materials. We should also thank Gary Miller in advance for our special ticket event on the beach this Saturday. What has been truly inspiring about these and many other individuals, has been their selfless contributions to LOVE 2001 and its beneficiaries. The greatest thanks, however, is reserved in advance for the 1,000 plus people we hope to see at the event Saturday night. Your contributions cannot be measured by a mere admission ticket alone, but by the inspiration your presence offers all the volunteers, and the real hope you bring to people in our own community by being a part of this very special night. Thank you for all of your help and inspiration. LOVE 2001 Co-Chairs, Mark Aguirre and Bill Alldredge |
