The Way I See It |

With the Fourth of July falling on a Wednesday this year, the celebration can last all week long. Of course, all the big Fourth of July events, like the Rehoboth Beach Main Street fireworks display and LOVE 2001, are being celebrated on the preceding weekend, but I'm betting that the whole week will be lively, fun filled, and a good time to be at the beach.
If you've never enjoyed Rehoboth's fireworks display, you've missed a real treat. The event, organized and produced by Rehoboth Beach Main Street, takes place on Sunday evening, July 1, beginning about 9:15 p.m., at the Boardwalk and Rehoboth Avenue. The best seats are right down on the beachbring a blanket or a beach chair, and sit back and have a good time. Park and Ride will be operating buses into downtown Rehoboth from Route One to cut down on the traffic congestion. Every Fourth of July weekend since 1995, the dance benefit LOVE has been raising money and the spirits of the Rehoboth Beach communityand this year is, of course, no exception. The event, which this year will raise much needed funds for the Sussex County AIDS Committee (50%), CAMP Rehoboth (30%), The Women's Project (10%) and Rehoboth Beach Main Street (10%), takes place on Saturday, June 30, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. Advance tickets are available at Lambda Rising and CAMP Rehoboth for $35get them early, because not only do they go fast, but they cost $45 at the door. Murray has promised a late night surprise unlike anything seen at LOVE beforeword is, be there by 11:30. With DJ Darryl Strickland and light man Paul Turner, it will be another great event. Several months ago, this magazine, Letters from CAMP Rehoboth, announced plans for a cover photo contest. The deadline for entry in the contest is July 14. The contest is designed to encourage beach house residents, groups of friends, restaurant and business staff, and anyone who wants to put a group together, to come up with a creative, outrageous, fabulous or campy photograph that captures some part of the special qualities that brought us all to Rehoboth in the first place. From some of the ideas floating around, I can't wait to see the results. As the Rehoboth community continues to grow and evolve, there is more and more to do each year. The last few years have seen the addition of The Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival and the Henlopen Theater Project. Last weekend was the highly successful Gay Men's Chorus Concert benefiting SCAC. You can now play Gay Bingo three times during the summer (the next game is scheduled for July 7 at the Convention Center) to benefit AIDS Delaware, the Rainbow Chorale of Delaware and Positive Light. Tea dances, happy hours and house parties keep the summer hopping. Some of those house parties have even grown into annual events, like the Full Moon Party (August 4), now in it's eighth year which will benefit the newly formed Positive Light. And, of course, the summer will end with the great grandmother of all Rehoboth fundraisers, SUNDANCE 2001, the big two night, Labor Day weekend event at the Convention Centernow in its fourteenth year. There is a great spirit in this community that is apparent in the many activities and events that take place here. It's apparent in the people who come back year after year. It's apparent in the growing year round community. It's a great place to visitit's a great place to live. Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July weekendlike the song says, "All you need is LOVE!" |
