Hungry? The Great Taste is May 18
On Friday, May 18, from 4-7 p.m., a dozen of Rehoboth's best restaurants will offer a Great Taste of their gourmet fare and a glimpse of some very special art exhibitionsall to benefit local organizations. Ticket holders will be able to stroll into some of the hottest spots in town, sample the fare and see a variety of dazzling artwork. Tickets are $20 per person, and all proceeds will benefit Rehoboth-Lewes Meals on Wheels, the Rehoboth Art League and Rehoboth Beach Main Street, Inc. It's a great opportunity to help these three community organizations. At the same time, you will get to see work by a host of regional artists, visit your favorite restaurants and check out some of the eateries you've been meaning to try. The event is co-sponsored by the Cape Gazette, Main Street and the Art League and tickets are going briskly. Participating restaurants include Celsius, Cloud 9, The Cultured Pearl, Caf Sol, Dogfish Head Restaurant, Full Moon Saloon, Our Place Restaurant, Ocean Club Restaurant, Summer House Restaurant, Dream Caf, and others. Travel the circuit from Wilmington to Rehoboth to Baltimore Avenues for a truly GREAT TASTE. There will be plenty of wonderful food, eye-popping artwork and great company, too. A cash bar will be available at each of the restaurants as well. Tickets for The Great Taste are limited to 250 and are already going fast, so don't miss out on what promises to be a great kick-off to the summer dining and fine art season! Gay Men's Chorus Returns to Rehoboth The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC will return to Rehoboth Beach on Saturday, June 23, for a performance at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. This will mark the fourth time that the chorus has appeared in Rehoboth Beach. Concert proceeds will again benefit the Sussex County AIDS Committee (SCAC), a community-based HIV and AIDS service organization. According to SCAC president Murray Archibald, "We've had sold out audiences for previous performances by the Gay Men's Chorus and we expect the same level of excitement and enthusiasm this year." Planning is just getting underway for this year's event. Anyone interested in volunteering to plan or help in other ways for the concert should call SCAC at 302-644-1090. There's Spring in Our Footsteps May is Older Americans Month. In an effort to promote public awareness of activities of senior citizens in the area, the Cape Henlopen Senior Center is sponsoring its annual two mile walk-a-thon fund raiser on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk on Saturday May 19, beginning at 9 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate in the walk-a-thon. If you cannot walk and would like to help support this fundraiser by making a donation, please make your check payable to "Cape Henlopen Senior Center" and mail to the above address. The Cape Henlopen Senior Center in Rehoboth Beach is a non-profit facility that provides activities designed to enhance the quality of life for local senior citizens. Proceeds from this fund raiser will go toward the Center's operating budget. Cape Drummers to Meet on May 9 Hand-drumming enthusiasts from around Southern Delaware will meet Wednesday, May 9, at 8 p.m., for a session of rhythm, motion, and singing. The free, monthly Community Drumming will be held at the Yoga Studio, above the NAPA Auto Parts store, in the Big Blue Building at 1120 Highway One, just south of the Five Points intersection near Lewes, Delaware. Community Drumming, held on the second Wednesday of every month, is a chance for drummers of all experience levels to share a wide range of instruments and rhythms. No experience is necessary. Celebrating 10 Years Swimming For Life Maryland's Swim for Life splashes off Saturday, July 14, 2001 with one, two, three, four and five mile courses on the Chester River. Open to participants who raise at least $100 prior to registration, the down, then up, river swim starts and finishes at Rolph's Wharf on the Queen Anne's County side of the river three miles south of Chestertown. Swimmers and volunteers will receive a T-shirt featuring artwork designed by Kent School studentswhose swim posters will be on display at The Compleat Bookseller for the three weeks preceding the event. Providing for swimmer's safety will be Kent and Queen Anne's County and local fire, rescue, dive, medic and ambulance teams, Chesapeake Paddlers, Chesapeake Boston Whalers, Maryland Natural Resources Police, the US Coast Guard and its Auxiliary. The band Bittersweet will perform at the swim which will include breakfast and a picnic lunch at noon followed by an awards ceremony. Proceeds will be shared by Kent and Queen Anne's County AIDS Foundation, Quality of Life Retreats, People With HIV/AIDS Coalition, STAR (Sisters Together & Reaching), AIDS Legislative Committee, MD Citizens' Health Initiative, Chester River Association and Chester Valley Ministers Association. Beaman's Marlene Heads to Rehoboth Theatre-lovers from all over will be falling in love again with Marlene Dietrich when the Henlopen Theater Project presents Black Market Marlene for an 8 p.m. performance, May 18 at Cape Henlopen High's Little Theater. Critically acclaimed cabaret performer Jamie Beaman will bring the legendary Marlene to life in a musical performance celebrating the provocative singer's celluloid triumphs. HTP chose to launch its 2001 season with this fundraising production in honor of Marlene Dietrich's 100th birthday. Black Market Marlene highlights some of Ms. Dietrich's most memorable musical moments, including songs such as "I May Never Go Home Anymore," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," and her signature piece "Falling in Love Again." Dietrich films represented in the show include Blonde Venus, Seven Sinners, Foreign Affair, the unforgettable Blue Angel and other nostalgic moments from the 1930s and 40s. Critics raved about Beaman's Black Market Marlene. One critic exclaimed "Beaman renders Dietrich so perfectly, so magnificently, I felt like I actually had seen the great lady herself!"
