Mautner Project Undertakes Groundbreaking Study of African-American Lesbians The Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer announced it will conduct a two-year study of African-American Lesbian (AAL) Health. Led by Mautner Project Health Promotion and Research Director, Cheryl Pearson-Fields, this groundbreaking national study will be designed, implemented, and evaluated by African-American Lesbians and will draw on partnerships with national and community-based organizations serving black lesbians. "African-American lesbians may face double jeopardy in terms of mortality and morbidity from cancer and other diseases," says Pearson-Fields. "Unfortunately, because we have not been well represented in studies on lesbian health, very little is known about our health status and health needs. This project will document specific cancer risk factors, screening behaviors and barriers to healthcare, and general health information for African-American lesbians." This nationwide African-American Lesbian Health Study will examine breast health beliefs and behaviors; risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and family history of cancer; past utilization of breast and cervical cancer screening; social support; real and perceived barriers to obtaining quality healthcare; and "outness" and gender identity. "Findings from this study will identify the health needs of African-American Lesbians, and help educators develop model interventions to increase screening rates for this vulnerable population," says Pearson-Fields. The Scientific Advisory Committee for the study includes noted researchers and practitioners involved in all aspects of women's health, including Lucille Adams-Campbell, MD, Director Howard University Cancer Center; Alicia Matthews, PhD, Director, Psychosocial Oncology Program, University of Chicago; Lisa Bowleg, PhD, Assistant Professor Department of Psychology University of Rhode Island; Nicole Cozier Boyd, MBA/MS, Public Education Director Ovarian Cancer National Alliance; and Joyce Hunter, DSW, Director of Community Liaison Programs, HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, New York State Psychiatric Institute. African-American Lesbians will be recruited nationally through community partners including African-American publications, newsletters, community groups, churches, and Internet sites, as well as gay and lesbian community/health centers, and lesbian cancer projects. This innovative research project is partially supported by a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. "It is one of the Komen Foundation's highest priorities to empower all women in the fight against cancer by providing them with the resources and information they need to make educated decisions about their health," says Komen's Director of Public Policy, Diane Balma. For more detailed information about the African-American Lesbian Health Survey, or if your organization is interested in joining as a community partner, please call Cheryl Pearson-Fields at 202-332-5536 or email cfields@mautnerproject.org.
