June Is Bustin' Out!
As seems to be the situation of late, there are so many activities happening in our area that I don't really have the space to discuss the useless theatrical minutiae trapped in my aging brain. I had all of these great plans to chat about the upcoming Tony awards and give my personal thoughts about 90-year-old Arthur Laurents directing the much-needed revival of Gypsy, (since it hasn't had a revival in nearly four years) or how happy I am to see exciting new shows like In the Heights and August: Osage County nominated. I certainly didn't need to use up any space to chat about why The Little Mermaid was not nominated for Best Musical. We hold some truths to be self-evident. Here's what's coming up in the local theatre scene: Possum Point Players (441 Old Laurel Highway in Georgetown) will present the classic The Little Foxes June 6-15. Featured in the production, (directed by my friend, John Marino) are Cat Baker, Claudius Bowden, Fred Dean, Lezlie Eustis, Doug Friend, Peyton Lynch, Don Megee, Kim Klabe, Beverly Smith, and George Spillane. Tickets are available by calling the Possum Ticketline at 302-856-4560. If you sing, dance or act (or any combination!) those Possums are holding auditions for their holiday musical, A Christmas Carol (originally presented at the Theater at Madison Square Garden) on June 9 and 10, 7 p.m. Prepare a solo vocal selection and bring a CD or the sheet music. Needed are 28 adults, 10 children and young adults. Rehearsals are slated to begin in the fall. For further information, contact the director, Nina Galerstein, at 302-228-5949. Don't miss Broadway star, Deidre Goodwin, in her one-woman show featuring songs and stories from her career in the Little Theatre of Cape Henlopen High on Saturday, May 31 at 7:00 and Sunday, June 1 at 3:00. Ms. Goodwin is currently featured in the revival of A Chorus Line and has starred in Chicago, Dreamgirls and Smoky Joe's Caf with actors like Chita Rivera, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith. Tickets are available by calling 302-644-3810 or online at www.ClearSpaceProductions.org. Milton Theatre presents the One Acts III festival/competition on May 30, 31, June 1, 6, 7 of six original one-act plays written by Delawareans. Entries will be adjudicated at the final performance June 7 and the winner will compete in the Delaware Theatre Association's competition in 2009 with a chance to go onto the Regional and National competitions. Featured are local actors Susan Newark, Tommye Staley, Nita Garey, Jean Savoy, Roger Ault, Suzette Chambers, Audrey Fisher-Killen, Deanna Duby, Pat Lyons, Ryan Morris, Tom Sweeney, Sharon Gambill, Dick Rosse and Becki Polk.
