Volunteer in Our Community; You'll Be Glad You Did!
One of the core beliefs of my adult life has been that the citizens of communities must work together to better the community for everyone. Throughout my career, I have made very conscious decisions to work for community organizations. In the years before CAMP Rehoboth this included the public education system, the library, and senior services. These were definitely not the organizations that paid the best, butoh what rewards! As a community volunteer, I have served on boards and advisory groups; monitored governmental meetings; worked at book sales; organized PTA volunteers; staffed candidates' offices; assisted with mailings; and hosted exchange students. It was often tiring work but I believe I was better for having been a part of the effort. In these very difficult financial times, the organizations who are integral to a community are taking a hit. The non-profit world counts on individuals who are willing to offer their "time, talent and treasure" to better the lives of others. If you are in a position to do that, don't wait to be asked. Volunteer your time; write the check; fill a gap. You will be glad that you did and the community will be better off for your efforts. Speaking of community, we have several opportunities to get together with our community in the upcoming days. The Rehoboth Beach Holiday Tree Lighting and Sing-Along will take place on November 28 beginning at 5:45. On December 1, World AIDS Day will be observed (see page 13). December 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. the annual Community Unity Dinner will take place at the Convention Center. I look forward to seeing you out and about in Rehoboth Beach this holiday season.Beth Fitton is Development Director of CAMP Rehoboth.
