LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
CAMP Youth Pride |
by Gail Jackson |
By way of introduction, my name is Gail Jackson. I am a Master's level Therapist with a specialty in Addictions Counseling and experience and interest in working with GLBT youth. My partner and I have been part time residents of Rehoboth Beach for over nine years. As we begin our transition into full time residents of Rehoboth Beach I want to become actively involved in the community.
One of the best ways that I could think of to become involved is with a GLBT Youth Group. I believe such a group is needed and necessary. For years many GLBT individuals have struggled with self acceptance and trying to find their place in a society that is not always tolerant of difference. That indifference has caused suffering in silence for some GLBT people. Thinking back many years ago, at age 15, I remember discovering Rita Mae Brown's book, Rubyfruit Jungle. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Could it be possible that I was not the only one? It is because of the multitude of experiences that many of you have experienced that I want to dedicate time to a local youth group. Future generations of GLBT youth should feel comfortable, assured, and affirmed in being their authentic selves. The Youth Group will provide an opportunity for open and non-judgmental discussion. An opportunity for feedback and support. We will laugh together and we may cry together, but no one will feel like the only one. If you are between 14 and 18, join us every other Thursday (starting Oct. 16) from 7-8:30 p.m. at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center, 37 Baltimore Avenue. For more information, call 302-227-5620. |
