Art Sale To Raise Funds for ALS
Friday, September 9 from 5-8 p.m., the first annual “Art for the Cause” will be held at CAMP Rehoboth, 37 Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. It will feature the work of local artists: oils, watercolors, pastels, fabric, digital photography, custom jewelry, painted furniture, sculpture, seashell tiles, and many additional pieces. The public is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served, and 100% of the proceeds of the sales will go directly to the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the ALS Association through the fund-raising efforts of Ted Pokorny, who was diagnosed with ALS in February 2010.
At the Rehoboth 2010 ALS Walk, Ted and his wife Joe were second in funds collected and were personally the highest individual money raisers in 2010 for the Greater Philadelphia Chapter. This year, they are determined to achieve even higher results. Ted, a retired Baltimore County art teacher and a 16- year resident of Rehoboth Beach, and his wife, Jo, are determined to look beyond their own current situation and reach out to the community to find the funds needed for more effective treatments and the continued research to find a cure for this debilitating and degenerative neuromuscular disease.
ALS, which affects 30,000 men and women in the United States between the ages of 35 and 70, has a life expectancy of two to five years from diagnosis. It is a progressive illness that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movements. In 1941, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) took the life of baseball great Lou Gehrig. Today, ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Jo asks, “Please, for all of us, do what you can to raise awareness and support this worthwhile effort by attending our fundraising events or contributing to ALS.” To make a donation, or for more information, call 1-877-GEHRIG-1 or visit
