Sundance, a New Budget, and Going With the Flow
She wants to party, she wants to get down, all she wants to do is dance! And she will certainly get her chance at Sundance, a two day event, Sept. 3 and 4. (Did you know that Sundance was originally a pool party planned for Steve Elkins and Murray Archibald’s tenth anniversary? It got rained out and become a dance benefit! Way to go Mother Nature!) I’ll never forget the first time I walked into the Convention Center and saw it transformed into Sundance. OMG! Are you kidding me? I almost walked back out the door and in again to make sure I wasn’t in a NY night club! Tickets are now available online.
I’ve been here five years and have seen a number of restaurants and businesses come and go. And while I miss some of my old favorites, I’m always excited to see what’s coming next. I just have no patience for people who are all doom and gloom when something closes. In fact, several shops and restaurants that I frequent are having their most profitable year ever. Nicola Pizza has been here for 40 years; Grotto’s just celebrated 50, and most of the wonderful things that make up our fabulous little resort are not going anywhere. And stop wishing away the crowds of people that come here in July and August! They actually make it possible for us to have so many sushi restaurants and tons of other dining choices all within minutes of each other.
On a lighter note, with things like Chickenstock, the Blessing of the Combines, and the World Championship Punkin Chunkin (where unsuspecting squash are hurled via catapult, trebuchet, and cannon) our little corner of the world is truly strange and wonderful all at the same time.
So by this time you’re wondering what’s new at the beach, so let’s get to it. If you’ve ever needed urgent medical care and loathe the E.R., the Beebe Walk-In Healthcare Center at Kmart is terrific. And now Kmart is offering something new—a Budget Car Rental. The response has been so good that they are already expanding into a larger space within the store.
On the restaurant scene, several places that were under construction have now opened including Shorebreak Lodge (in the former Cosmopolitan), Mallory Square Fish House (in the former La La Land), The Kitchen in Paynter’s Mill, and coming our way is Jake’s Hamburgers (in the former Candy Kitchen space near Giant). If you haven’t been to some of your favorites recently, you might get a nice surprise when you do. With all the new openings, I hadn’t been to Rigby’s for a while. I went this past week and the menu they debuted earlier this year is terrific (and still offers my favorite mac and cheese).
I hope you’ve had an enjoyable summer and if the weather or crowds has fluffed your skirt a bit more than usual, then I hope September finds you back to your sassy self.
