Servicemembers United Hosts Gay Military Weekend
Servicemembers United, the nation’s largest organization of gay and lesbian troops and veterans, has announced that it is holding its first annual gay military weekend in Rehoboth over the weekend of July 23-24. The Washington DC organization is partnering with local residents and businesses to hold a series of informal events in the area over the target weekend, including a Saturday afternoon reception and pool party at the beach home of Robert Kabel, a gay military night at Aqua on Saturday, and a “recovery brunch” on Sunday.
“This is an opportunity for us to give something back to the gay military community,” said Alex Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicememers United and himself an Army veteran. “For years, our work has been all about politics and getting ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repealed and fighting our way to a normal existence in the military. While we still have a lot of work left to do, LGBT troops and vets are long due some relaxation and fun, and welcoming them to Rehoboth Beach for a specially branded gay military weekend is a perfect way to start.”
