Even though this is the third issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth to be released with a July date this season, August will be here by the time it finds its way into the hands of many of our readers. With much of the country suffering under a “heat dome,” it is apparent that the dog days of summer have arrived in full force and we are counting down the weeks as we approach Labor Day weekend.
A countdown to the end of summer is also a countdown to Sundance, our biggest and most exciting event of the year. Though the cut-off is drawing near, there is still time to sign-up to be a Sponsor, Supporter, or Host of Sundance 2011. The support of our Sponsors, Supporters, and Hosts make Sundance possible, so please, sign-up for Sundance online today, or call the CAMP Rehoboth office and help us make this year’s Sundance another great success. With the economy still lagging, and budgets on the chopping block everywhere we look, it takes all of us pulling together to make this Rehoboth tradition work. It also takes volunteers, and the CAMP Rehoboth Volunteer Team is hard at work rounding up the hundreds of volunteers needed to keep the Sundance engine working smoothly. If you have not already done so, fill out the volunteer form online.
Kicking off the week leading up to the big Sundance weekend will be the second annual Sundance 5k Run, Walk, or Sashay. The 5k welcomes everyone: serious runners and walkers, and those who just want to enjoy the day or dress up and “sashay” through the streets of Rehoboth. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. (registration at 6 a.m.), on Sunday, August 28 at CAMP Rehoboth. Awards are given to the top three finishers in nine categories (plus a prize for best costume). Register for Sundance 5k.
August is also election time in Rehoboth Beach, and on Friday, July 22, CAMP Rehoboth and the Rehoboth Beach Homeowners’ Association presented a Candidates Forum at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. If you missed that event or just want to know more, don’t miss our 2011 CAMP Rehoboth Candidates Forum in the issue. All the candidates responded to our questions and I thank them for their participation. In the mayoral race, incumbent Sam Cooper is facing Tom McGlone; for two positions as City Commissioner, incumbent Lorraine Zellers is joined by newcomers Mark Hunker and Richard Kirchhoff. The Rehoboth Beach election will take place on Saturday, August 13. Polls will be open from 10 a.m-6 p.m, and you must be registered to vote. Though it’s too late to register for this election, do it now for next year. Rehoboth law allows property owners and full time residents to vote.
Recently, CAMP Rehoboth has focused attention on financial and legal events aimed at providing usable information to LGBT couples interested in learning how the new Civil Union legislation might impact their lives. On Thursday, July 21, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney presented a very informative session that the assembled crowd seemed to appreciate. As a part of that event, New York attorney Alan Wolberg spoke about what he termed the “I Love You Letter.” Listening to him talk (and I hate to admit this), I realized that the “I Love You Letter” was exactly the document that my partner Murray has been asking me to put together for years. The “I Love You Letter” simply lists all the things your partner will need to know in the event of your death including: banking information, important papers, safety deposit keys and more. He called it the “I Love You Letter” because he said, “if you love your partner, this is something you will do to make their life easier.”
As i mentioned in the last issue of Letters, CAMP Rehoboth is accepting applications for the position of Administrative Assistant. Email resume and cover letter to Steve Elkins.
