March 11, 2011 - Volunteer Spotlight by Chris Beagle

In recognition of CAMP Rehoboth’s 21st anniversary, we’re continuing our Volunteer Spotlight to honor many of the behind-the-scenes heroes that we’re so fortunate to have in our CAMP family.

The Spotlight is an ongoing column in Letters and features recipients who’ve been selected by the volunteers themselves and you, our readers.

If you know someone whose efforts are worthy of consideration, please make a nomination. We’ll be maintaining a database that will be used to help determine future recipients. To vote for  a CAMP Rehoboth Volunteer Spotlight, send us an email.

Kathy and Corky Fitzpatrick: All About Volunteering!

When I first approached Kathy about this feature, she was quick to point out, “My spouse of 48 years, Corky, is a very private person, so I guess this is mostly about me.” We certainly respect privacy and realize not everyone is comfortable seeing personal information in print. This was a main reason I revised the Interview format this year to be more light and entertaining than last.

In the case of the Fitzpatrick’s, it’s safe to say that after nearly half a century of marriage, we can assume a good deal of Kathy’s responses (proceeded by “I”) will apply to both of them. Regardless, we’re very grateful for their years of support and volunteer efforts here at CAMP Rehoboth.

Kathy and Corky volunteer annually for Sundance and have just started their fourth season helping to deliver issues of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth to the various drop-off points in the area. They also maintain the supply between issues and Kathy regularly drops off “treats” on deadline night, such as cheesecake or a fruit bowl, to help keep the staff nourished for a very late night of work. In the community, they also volunteer for CAMP Rehoboth at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library’s book sales, as well as helping CAMP Rehoboth serve desserts at the annual holiday Community Unity Dinner at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.

Kathy and Corky are retired and reside in Canal Landing here in Rehoboth, along with their cat, Noel.

When/why did you start volunteering for CAMP?

We started volunteering for CAMP about four years ago, after my cousin’s (Larry) spouse, Mikey, died of AIDS related complications.

What’s been your best memory volunteering here?

The interaction with CAMP Rehoboth staff and other volunteers means a lot to both if us. We have wonderful memories of so many people.

What does CAMP Rehoboth mean to you?

“Room for ALL!” Absolutely!

If you had an extra hour in the day, what would you do?

We’d do more volunteer work.

“Wouldn’t you like to be a CAMPer too?” How would you encourage someone to get involved with us?

Just come out, no pun intended, and sign up to do something. It’s really simple to get involved. Come join us!

More self-disclosure…please provide a little known fact about you, until now that is.

I’ve been helping Reverend Dale Dunning with her “Jusst Sooup” ministry for several years. (Author’s note: Rev. Dunning, an ordained minister, founded Jusst Sooup Ministries 13 years ago. Dale, and her volunteers, make over 100 gallons of home-made soup in her kitchen several times per week and travel across Sussex County in her RV setting up soup-kitchens at various organizations that work to support those in need.)

Assuming you have any, what else do you like to do in your spare time?

We like to collect sea shells, read, do puzzles, and visit our grandson.

Cher’s not the only one who’d like to turn back time. If you could, what age/period would you return too? Why?

I grew up in a very bigoted home. If I could turn back time, I’d try to enlighten those around me about tolerance and diversity.

Someone reading this wants to buy you a “thank you” beverage. What would it be?

If we’re talking daytime, probably a latte. If it’s after 5, it would be a different answer. LOL!

Friends are coming over for a dinner party? What’s your signature dish?

London Broil. I’ve been making it for over 40 years.

We’ve seen many iconic entertainers over the years. Who’s your favorite? Why?

Bette Midler, Elton John, and Barry Manilow. There’s really no special reason why, just been a fan of each for many years.

Sustenance: Favorite food? Beverage?

Filet mignon and Burgundy wine.
