Fall into the Arts
What a glorious time of year. Autumn brings a gradual slowing to the pace of our piece of the globe, and the arts season kicks into high gear! With all these great things happening around the area you shouldn’t miss one, but I’ll settle for your commitment to attend at least one event listed below. All locations are Rehoboth Beach, unless otherwise noted.
PERFORMING ARTS
Clear Space Theatre Company (20 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2270); Sussex County’s only year-round professional troupe joins the Sea Witch festivities with The Pirate Coast—a high-stakes, swashbuckling adventure! Will Captain Kidd and his band torture, terrorize or bury you in the sand for the gulls? October 21-23/28 -30 (5-9 p.m. in half-hour intervals). $5 general admission available only at the door. November 5 and 6 Mark Twain takes to the Clear Space stage in a stunningly fresh and blazingly funny evening of theatre. Actor John Chappell bring Twain’s stinging commentaries on the human race to life. The Clear Space family tradition Scrooge! is back for another spirited holiday season full of ghosts, greed, and great singing and dancing! Don’t miss this wonderful holiday event. November 25-December 11.
Coastal Concerts (in residence at Bethel UMC Hall; Fourth and Market Streets in Lewes; 888-212-6458; P.O. Box 685; Lewes, DE. 19958) presents the Israeli Chamber Project, October 15 at 8 p.m. The group of five Israeli-born musicians (violin, cello, piano, harp and clarinet) opens Coastal Concerts’ 2011-2012 season. The Lincoln Trio appears November 19 (8 p.m.). The Chicago-based ensemble of violin, cello, and piano offers works by Beethoven, Smetana and contemporary composers. Tickets: $25; ages 10-18 with one accompanying adult are free.
Epworth United Methodist Church (19285 Holland Glade Road; 302-227-7743); presents the Vermont-based folk ensemble The Woods Tea Company performing fiery Celtic, sea shanties, blue grass and Americana. Sunday, October 16 (3:30 p.m.) Tickets: $20 at the door.
Possum Point Players (441 Old Laurel Road in Georgetown; 302-856-4560); offers Echoes Of War: The Enduring Human Spirit—an original production depicting the mixed emotions associated with the presence of war, based on first hand reports, diary entries, and journals. November 4-6. Tickets: $10. The Possums’ Christmas Hit Parade, features favorite Christmas songs, in the style of Your Hit Parade. December 2-11. Tickets: $20; $19 (Seniors/ Students)
Southern Delaware Choral Society (PO Box 444; 302-645-2013) performs Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, December 10 at Cape Henlopen High (3 p.m.) and Sunday, December 11 at Del Tech in Georgetown (3 p.m.) offers an audience sing-along. The 80-member chorus and four professional soloists are accompanied by an orchestra. *AerieArt Gallery (45½ Lake Avenue; 302-227-5376/302-584-6402); continuing through November is an exhibition of the exquisite oil paintings of Lewes artist Victor Letonoff in Lighting Strikes—featuring “Salute to the USS Delaware,” a 1910 battleship. Also always on display are paintings from the 19th Century to the present.

*Heidi Lowe Gallery (328 Rehoboth Avenue; 302-227-9203); features handmade, contemporary jewelry by studio artists from around the world.
*Juleez (20 Baltimore Avenue at the Celebration Mall; 302-227-3792); features hand-painted cellos, violins, miniature pianos, beautiful acrylic on canvas originals, and giclee prints by Julie Borden.
*Kevin Fleming & Friends (239 Rehoboth Avenue); features work by National Geographic photographer, and local resident, Kevin Fleming. Photographs, books and calendars, as well as art and photography from Deb Applebee, Tony Pratt, and Pam Bieler.
Midge Smith Fine Art Gallery (135 Second Street, second floor, in Lewes; 302-245-4528); Art for a Purpose assists tax-exempt organizations by turning donated art into cash for their use. Gallery hours: 2-6 p.m., Friday-Sunday, through Christmas.

Peninsula Gallery (520 E. Savannah Rd in Lewes; 302-645-0551); On the Move—a selection of works from the personal collection of the gallery owners through November 23. Opening November 26—Small Jewels 8—a group show of small works with equally small prices designed for the gift-giving season.

The Presence of the Unseen: New Works by Constance Costigan in the Ventures Gallery and Schadenfruede: New Works by Cassie Taggart in the Homestead Gallery. Their annual Fine Art and Craft Show—Holiday Fair happens Saturday, November 5 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Admission: $5.
