Lorne Crawford: Auctioneer Extraordinaire

Lorne is the owner and auctioneer of Crawford Auction Company, a company he established in 1999, located in Muncy, Pennsylvania. Prior to that, he was employed as a Senior Account Executive for 20 years.

Married for 27 years, Lorne only came out at the age of 47. For me at least, even more interesting is the fact that he has only moved once in his entire life, and it was across the hall! Lorne has lived in the same home all of his life. His parents built it and after his father died when he was just 18 years old (his younger brothers were just 12 and 13), Lorne went on to raise his brothers as the head-of-household. While doing so, he put himself through the local community college.

During that time, he literally married the “girl next door,” his next door neighbor whom he went to school with from kindergarten to graduation. They went on to have a daughter, Taylor Ann Crawford. Having personally observed them together numerous times over the last few years, suffice to say Lorne is an extremely proud father, and they share a very close relationship.
In addition to travelling to Rehoboth as often as he can throughout the year, Lorne also enjoys snowmobiling, traveling, hiking, and working out at the gym.

When/why did you start volunteering at CAMP?

My first volunteer experience with CAMP was in 2010, serving as auctioneer for the live auction portion of Sundance. I was elated to do it because I love the mission of CAMP and what it does for the community of Rehoboth and the state of Delaware.

What’s been your best memory volunteering here?

Auctioneering for Sundance and simply the donation of time for set-up of this wonderful event!

What does CAMP Rehoboth mean to you?

This question all but brings a tear to my eye. The organization is like a family of the most wonderful people I’ve ever had the honor of meeting in my life! I’m truly honored and humbled to play a small role with this wonderful organization and I’ve met some of the most amazing people in my life here—Steve, Murray, and Sal are my heroes! Oh, and not to forget you, my friend…being a small part in your proposal at last year’s Sundance, to your life-long partner Eric, was one of the most moving moments in my “out” life. Being from a state that doesn’t allow marriage equality, not having any real gay community here in Muncy, having few close gay friends, and after being married for so many years and having mostly all straight friends, it totally touched my heart! You have no idea!

What events/activities have you been involved with at CAMP?

Sundance, Black and White Ball, and this year’s Bachelor Auction.

If you could spend a full day with one person, who would it be?

OMG! This is an easy one…Barbra Streisand, aka “Babs!”

“Wouldn’t you like to be a CAMPer too?” How would you encourage someone to get involved with us?

I would simply and enthusiastically explain all the benefits the organization brings to so many different people from so many walks of life and emphasize the impact CAMP has on the community.

Tell us something that very few people know about you…

“A.D.D.” my attention span is about one minute!

First thought that comes to mind when you hear the word “Rehoboth.”

My childhood. Plus, this is where I plan to relocate some day; good friends, and new friends to meet.

Assuming you visit here year round, what’s your favorite thing to do in the off season?

Sit on the beach. I love the sound of the ocean.

Where was your last vacation destination and what influenced you to go there?

I spent the month of February on the west coast visiting Palm Springs, LA, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Friends are coming over for dinner. What will you make?

Wow...ummmm, parsley potatoes, pasta with prosciutto and leeks, and a grilled steak. I love to grill.

Who’s your favorite current musician or entertainer? Who’s your favorite of all-time?

Current favorite is Adam Levine. He is so handsome! And you can see from above, all time favorite is easily Barbra.

What is your favorite TV show currently? All-time favorite?

Currently it’s Revenge, and of all time, let me think, I guess I’d have to say 24.

What is the last book you’ve read?

Bridges of Madison County.

Would you rather go to the movies or watch one at home? Assuming you have, what was the last movie you watched?

I’d much rather watch a movie at home, and the last movie I rented from Redbox was Safe House. Loved it!

What was your last text, post or tweet? And to whom, if applicable.

This one is also easy. It was a facebook post about my lovely daughter and her beginning her new career in Washington, DC with Cvent, a global event planner. Good luck, Taylor!

I’ve met so many wonderful people in my years of being involved here at CAMP Rehoboth. You are definitely among the top of that group, Lorne. You share a beautiful and unique story, and I consider myself fortunate to be counted among your friends. CAMP Rehoboth shares in that fortune for the contributions you’ve made, and we look forward to working with you on many more events in the years ahead. Our sincere thanks!
