February 3, 2012 - I Am My Own Wife

Mablewood Dental Sponsors I Am My Own Wife at CAMP Rehoboth

The one-man show, I Am My Own Wife, by playwright Doug Wright and starring New York actor and Actor’s Equity member Timothy Babcock is coming to Rehoboth for two performances only on February 18.

In the show, direct from Provincetown, MA, Babcock portrays the real-life Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, a transvestite, who knew from childhood he preferred being a woman and lived that way despite an abusive father, imprisonment, the Nazi regime, and then the repressive Communist government in East Berlin.

Charlotte was a museum curator, all the while affiliated with the German gay community. Her tale of survival intrigued playwright Doug Wright, who, as he wrote about her, got caught up in her mysterious story.

In this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning one-man show, Babcock plays more than 30 male and female characters, including the playwright working to uncover the secrecy of how Charlotte endured in the political and social turmoil of the era

Babcock, who performed the show in both New York City and Provincetown has gotten raves for his tour-de-force performance. Kathi Scrizzi Driscoll, of Cape Cod Online says, “He’s in command of every scene and manages to raise sympathies and doubts at once. He and director Susan Grilli keep the characters, locations, and movement interesting enough that the show never falters as the audience tries to put together the pieces of this unusual peek into history.”

Actor Babcock was born in Delaware and is presenting these two performances entirely as a benefit for CAMP Rehoboth.“ I’m very pleased to be bringing this beautiful play back to the state and people who gave me my first taste of theatre,” he says.

Born at Dover AFB, Babcock performed with the community singers, acted in high school in New Jersey, studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, and has performed numerous shows in Manhattan (including Lincoln Center) as well as in his part-time home of Provincetown.

The two performances—sponsored by Maplewood Dental—will be at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 18.

Tickets ($20) are on sale now and are limited. Purchase tickets online or call 302-227-5620 to reserve your seats for this amazing production.
