August 22, 2014 - The Way I See It by Steve Elkins

I am always astounded when we reach the last issue of the summer season. The month of August seems to fly by at supersonic speed! This is number 12 in the 24th volume of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth, and our big Labor Day weekend issue. With its publication, we will return to our monthly publishing schedule—which means there are only three more issues in 2014! Then, in January of 2015, we will kick off a year-long 25th Anniversary celebration for CAMP Rehoboth and for Letters from CAMP Rehoboth. I am just as amazed by that as I am by the arrival of Labor Day!

Labor day weekend is, of course, Sundance, our biggest and most spectacular event of the year, and speaking of anniversaries, this year is the 27th Sundance! Sundance is, of course, also a very special event for my husband Murray and me: the very first one back in 1988 was our 10th anniversary party. We got married last October, so this year as we celebrate our 36th anniversary, it will be the first one that I can truly say “husband” and mean it! In his CAMPmatters column in this issue, Murray writes more about Sundance, and Nancy Sakaduski provides the latest update on the Sundance Auction. Tickets for Sundance are available at CAMP Rehoboth or on the CAMP Rehoboth website. Don’t miss this year’s Sundance—Rainbow XXVII: The Love Dream—Return to Xanadu is going to be another over-the-top weekend of fun!

One more word about Sundance—as always, we are deeply grateful to the hundreds of Sponsors, Supporters, Hosts, auction donors and volunteers who make the event happen. Sundance is truly a community effort and the money it raises helps to make it possible for us: to continue to operate and maintain the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center; to advocate for local and state LGBT rights; to provide HIV/AIDS outreach, testing, and counseling; to provide a meeting place for support groups; to provide home support for cancer and other seriously ill patients in our community; to create a safe place for LGBT youth and adults; to provide support for other area non-profit organizations; to support the work of local artists and musicians (the CAMP Rehoboth Chorus); and to do all the other things that happen here at CAMP Rehoboth.

In September, the very popular singing string quartet Well-Strung returns to Rehoboth Beach for one night only—and with an all new show! Last year the quartet performed three sold-out shows at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center; this year we have moved the concert to the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, and tickets are going fast. In fact, we are almost sold-out of the $100 front table seating. There are still general admission seats ($75, $50, and $35) available, but they are going fast as well. Tickets are available at camprehoboth.com or by calling CAMP Rehoboth.

None of CAMP Rehoboth’s events, including Sundance, the Sundance Land and Sea, Well-Strung, Women’s FEST, and Starburst Gayla, to name a few, would happen without Sponsors. Anyone who has paid attention to our individual event sponsor lists over the last few years will have noticed our CAMP Rehoboth Annual and Annual Premier Sponsors listed on everything. Becoming a CAMP Rehoboth Annual Sponsor makes sponsorship decisions a snap. It’s all-in-one coverage that provides a logo on almost everything we do, as well as web and print advertising. Call me for more information about becoming a CAMP Rehoboth Annual or Premier Annual Sponsor.

Just because the summer season is coming to a close, doesn’t mean that fun in Rehoboth ends, as well. In fact, I think it’s the very best time of year. The fall festival season begins October 16-19 with the amazing Rehoboth Beach Autumn Jazz festival, and continues on October 24-26 with the Rehoboth Sea Witch Festival. On November 5-9 the always popular Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival returns with more than 75 films in two locations.
