Eat, Drink, and Be Musical!
If you’ve been a follower of my column for a while, you know this is the time of year that I stop cooking at home (ok, I stop microwaving) and take advantage of the spectacular specials offered by all the local restaurants. Very few of our fine dineries (I hope that’s a word) pack up for the winter anymore, so to stay in business and lure the locals out of their homes, they offer tasty tidbits and cool cocktails at delicious prices.
According to Trip Advisor, Rehoboth Beach has 233 restaurants. That includes candy stores, and more, i.e. Nonna’s Sweet Treats, which is currently ranked #1. I haven’t been there yet, but my hips got bigger thinking about it. The first actual restaurant on the list is Henlopen City Oyster House at #3. Our beloved Lori’s Café is #5, and yummilicious Modern Mixture is #8. Lewes has 74 “restaurants” with Surf Bagel in the top position. So how in the world can you know all the specials with so many choices? Ahhh… let me tell you. You must visit RehobothFoodie.com and click on the Cheap Eats link. It’s pages and pages of information—updated on a daily basis. Click on the Breaking Chews link to find the latest culinary happenings. By the time I hear about a new restaurant, the Foodie has been there twice and reviewed it.
I found out from the Foodie that J.D.’s Café in Lewes will soon be Honey’s Farm Fresh Food & Drink, featuring juices and smoothies, breakfast and lunch. And later this year the Dewey Beer and Food Company, a combination craft brewery and restaurant, will open in Dewey Beach.
Lula Brazil is now open in the former Cloud 9 space and as I write this their Facebook page is promoting Sunday Funday with drink specials, half off the bar menu, and DJ Bis spinning dance music starting at 9 pm. Love the sound of that! Yoga Fresh (located near Big Sissies) is now offering ten different soups every day (including a gluten free and vegan option) with a tasting station so you can sample before you buy. Check out their juice bar, too.
Heard about Rehoboth in White? Organizers describe it as “a unique and elegant pop-up summer evening for ‘BYO’ Wine and Food enthusiasts. Guests dress in their trendiest white outfits and provide their own picnic basket dinner.” You don’t learn the location until 48 hours prior to the event; proceeds benefit the Cape Henlopen Education Foundation. I googled Dinner in White and was surprised to find that cities such as DC and New York use this idea to raise money for various charities. Go Rehoboth! See their ad on page 20.
Now that I’ve fattened you up with all this talk about food, let me remind you that Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival tickets are already on sale, and the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD season begins October 11 at the Cape Henlopen High School theater. Hurry and get your seats for Well-Strung on Friday, September 26 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. The phenomenal singing string quartet—who performed for sold-out audiences in Rehoboth Beach last year, is coming back for one show only at the Convention Center to benefit the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. Tickets ($35-$100) are available at camprehoboth.com.
