Rehoboth Bears Recognize GSA Students at Cape High
On June 1, the Rehoboth Beach Bears presented scholarships to three deserving students during the 2017 Senior Awards Ceremony at the Cape Henlopen High School. The $1,000 scholarships were awarded to 1) Ashleigh Ling, 2) Katherine Maher, and 3) Juan Marquez by Rehoboth Bears Board Members Ken Mahan and Terry Kistler. They were given in recognition of the students’ involvement with the school’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) and its work to make the school safe for students regardless of sexual orientation. The group meets to discuss issues that affect them and to support each other, under the supervision of faculty and community advisors.
“Our ability to provide the scholarships to members of the Gay-Straight Alliance goes to the core of our nonprofit mission: to give to those who provide for community betterment,” said Chris Berg of the Rehoboth Beach Bears. The Rehoboth Beach Bears faced their own challenges when the review team had to select the scholarship recipients. “We were delighted with the number of scholarship applications we received, and all of the applicants were worthy,” explains Glen Pruitt. “We would have loved to give scholarships to all of them!”
Reaction to the Rehoboth Beach Bears scholarships was overwhelmingly positive, from school administrators to parents and students.
