Transgender Alliance Organizational Meeting: I am happy to say that our first meeting was a big success. [MCC] Pastor Rita Nelson did a great job presenting her experiences raising her transgender daughter Kristen. After the presentation we broke into groups and discussed special questions relating to transgender issues. There were a lot of great opinions and stories. Everyone had a fun evening, and we are all anxious to do it again.
After a long discussion with several attendees we have decided that the focus of this group is going to be education through social interaction. At the last meeting I announced that the next meeting would be closed to anyone who is not transgender but that has changed. The meeting at 7 p.m. on May 28 will be open to anyone interested in supporting our transgender community.
The goal of this group is not to isolate people but to bring them into the light. To provide a safe environment for transgender, non-binary, gender queer, cross dressers, all members of the LGBTQ community, as well as non-transgender, binary and cis-gendered people together. It is time we get to know each other.
Some of things we are going to be doing are dance lessons, hair and makeup lessons, educational seminars, advocacy, and social outings. All of these will be open to anyone who wishes to support and interact with the transgender community.
The agenda for the May 28 meeting at the Rehoboth MCC church is simple. We need to decide on a name for the group. We will be setting a schedule; coming up with ideas for education as well as entertainment; discussing needs of the community as well as resolutions; setting goals and plans to achieve those goals. Again this meeting is open to everyone. Bring your ideas, comments, friends, and neighbors. It is time we walk in the light together.
