EATING Out |
by Barry Becker |
A long-time friend of mine just moved to the area (at a time when I'm moving away) and we decided to catch up over dinner on a rainy weekend night. We checked out Dos Locos in their newest reincarnation at 10 Wilmington Avenue (formerly the site of Mano's and Confetti's). It's a vividly colorful and bright space with lots of piatas hanging from the ceiling and the bar now partitioned off from the dining room, which is a welcome addition. Dos Locos has everything good Mexican restaurants should have, including an extensive menu full of quesadillas, fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, burritos and chimichangas. This means, of course, there are way too many selections from which to choose! With frozen margaritas in hand and a hardy basket of chips and salsa, we looked over the menu carefully. For starters, the Bay Skins sounded great, potato skins topped with lump crab and melted cheese, dusted with old bay, but we were definitely going to get an entre with crab, so we opted for a new item on the menu, a taco dip of wonderful warm spinach and cheese, along with an old favorite, chili poppers. These are deep fried to perfection and served with a dipping sauce, stuffed with piping hot cheese that squirts out of the chiles when you bite into them. Yum! Other starters and munchies included Mexican tortilla soup, black bean chile, nachos, shrimp cocktail, and a Mexicali corn dog. We'll try these on another trip. For dinner we had Darryl's Favorite: Loco Enchilada, two corn tortillas filled with lump crab and topped with chipotle cream sauce and melted cheese. Let's just say we could have had several more rounds of this, which was just incredible on every level, from the crab to the sauce. It was served with a side of refried beans and rice. There are also spicy clam tacos and fish tacos that sounded promising, as well as a crab quesadilla and the Del Mar quesadilla with bay shrimp and lump crab. We decided for our second entre, however, to try something from the American Flare side of the menu, which includes items such as lobster cakes, grilled fish, cheese steaks, Alaskan king crab legs, fish and chips, and Seafood Senor, which is a tasty-sounding grilled trio of shrimp, scallops and fish. We opted for another new item on the menu, the grilled tuna steak, a hearty piece of tuna grilled to order with mushrooms and spinach and served with Mexican rice and a salad of romaine with a delicious ginger vinaigrette. As usual, I ate too much, so we split a dessert. We could have chosen a flan or margarita cheesecakes, chocolate decadence or fried tortillas smothered in cinnamon, but we chose the fried ice cream, which was a perfect end to the evening. A big ball of vanilla ice cream is deep fried with coconut and served with two sauces drizzled over the plate. Only two weeks into their new space, Dos Locos is already packed and busy, with the feel of a long-established restaurant. Find out why on your next trip into town!
