LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |
by Steve Elkins, Editor |
Two weeks ago, Memorial Day brought a great big burst of energy to the streets of Rehoboth and in the process jump started the 1998 season. From all reports it looks to be a great summer, with more houses than ever signing up for the Beach Book and several new bars and restaurants joining the already familiar ones. We wish you a happy and trouble free summer, so just as a reminder to those who may have forgotten or to those of you new to the Rehoboth area: Parking meters are in effect from 10 a.m. until midnight seven days a week, and in non-metered areas a parking permit is needed from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. A variety of permits are available at the parking permit stands at various locations around the city. During season, bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk only between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Roller Blades and skates are not allowed on the bandstand, boardwalk or Rehoboth Avenue. Also, it is illegal to have alcohol or dogs on the beach or boardwalk. And dont try to take a stroll on the beach between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.its officially closed. Enough about rules and regulationsgo out and have some fun! Some of you may have noticed that on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, LETTERS was suddenly yanked from the streets and replaced with a second edition. It seems that our printer left the middle eight pages on the press room floor. Thanks to the quick efforts of Dover Post Printing in correcting a serious mistake, and Ken Mahan, Guy Handy, Glen Pruitt and Kathy Weir for doing the redistribution, the problem was quickly solved. We apologize for any inconvenience to our readers and our advertisers. Speaking of our advertisers, they are the ones who make it possible for us to do a great deal of the work that we do at CAMP Rehoboth. Be sure to take the time to tell these advertisers that you saw their ad in LETTERS. One of the goals of CAMP Rehoboth has always been to create an environment open to all of the community. Unlike some to the other gay and lesbian resorts, we are not a "gay ghetto." The gay and lesbian community here blends with the whole town and we see that reflected in the diverse advertisers that appear on these pages. Memorial Day also saw the kick-off of CAMPsafe, our new safe sex program. If your household has not yet received its CAMPsafe package, be sure to stop by the CAMP Rehoboth office and pick it up. Michael Cover, CAMPsafe project director, has created a fun campaign to keep this deadly serious issue in front of us all summer long. Plus, the long awaited CAMPsafe tattoos have arrived. I cant wait to see what creative uses some of you will find for that. In fact, send us some photos of you and your beach house wearing the tattoos and whatever else the situation seems to demand. If the pictures are good enough, who knows, you might end up on the cover! Yes, the summer is off to a good start. From Karaoke with CAMPsafe diva Gladys Kravitz at the Renegade to the SCAC Benefit by the Washinton Gay Mens Chorus, or the upcoming "White Party" at Cloud 9, or the pre LOVE98 events the Bachelor Auction at the Blue Moon and the Tough LOVE Fetish Fest at the Double L (see BEING SCENE page 42 for details), Rehoboth should provide something for everyone in the next few weeks. Quite often a photograph with me in it comes across my desk and Murray almost always vetos my using itsomething about not being self serving and all that. Anyway, I slipped one past him this time, but its not easy to find. What else can I say butwheres Steve? |
