Gala Opens 4th Annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Fest - Nov. 7 |
The fourth annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival is gearing up for its most exciting opening yet, with more guests than ever and a fabulous line-up of restaurants at the Opening Night Gala. The Gala this year is at the Bay Center in Dewey Beach's Ruddertowne. It will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7 beginning at 7 p.m. In addition to the great food, film clips and open bar, jazz ensemble The Kings of Mojo will entertain during the night, all for $25.
Festival films will screen Nov. 8 11 at the Movies at Midway on Highway One, where the festival will have use of 9 screens. A special Festival Box Office will be open in the Midway Shopping Center near the Duron paint store, just doors away from the theaters. All tickets will need to be purchased at the Festival Box Office which opens at 10:30 a.m. daily during the festivalThurs., Nov. 8 - Sun., Nov. 11. Coffee Mill will provide coffee and other beverages, as well as pastries and light snacks during the day, with the Film Buff Bar serving cocktails and soft drinks. Plus, a festival buffet lunch will be offered each day by 1776 Restaurant at Midway. Attendees will also be able to meet many of the festival sponsors, join the Film Society, and purchase festival merchandise such as posters, travel mugs, and T-shirts. Opening Gala The Opening Night Gala will feature some of the festivals many guests. Attendees will be able to see film clips from several of the films, while also meeting the filmmakers behind them. Expected to attend the Opening Night are Catherine Crouch, director/writer of Stray Dogs, which stars actress/producer/writer Guinivere Turner (Go Fish, American Psycho) in a Tennessee Williams-like story set in Appalachia about the last night of a bad marriage. Doug Sadler, director/writer of Riders, from Maryland's Eastern Shore, and recently named one of the 25 new independent filmmakers to watch by Filmmaker magazine will also be at the Opening, along with veteran film director Bobby Roth with his film, Jack the Dog, which recently premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival. P.J. Posner, director/writer, and Andrew Fierberg, producer, will be here with their new work, The Next Big Thing. Producer Dan Dubiecki and Director Jason Reitman will also be at the Opening with a sneak look at one of their 4 short films in the festival, including In God We Trust, which won top honors at many film festivals last year. In addition to great films, the Gala will also feature great food from some of the area's finest restaurants. Included among them are Blue Moon, Cloud 9, Espuma, The Lamp Post, Rusty Rudder, and Taste of Heaven Catering, with desserts by Pasqualini's Bakery. Of Gay and Lesbian Interest Of special interest to the gay and lesbian community are a number of narrative and documentary films, several of which have won awards and accolades at festivals around the world. Included among the feature films are Iron Ladies, an hysterical story of the Thai men's volleyball team that won the national championship with a team consisting mostly of gays, transvestites and transsexuals; Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the multi-award winning film that's been rocking the country with its wild tale and great tunes; The Girl, the sexiest lesbian film of the year, set in Paris; Burnt Money, an award-winning film that tells the tale of two lovers who are small time crooks in Argentina; Borstal Boy, the tale of a 16-year old Irish republican in a British reform institution who faces the ambiguity of his personal beliefs; Adventures of Felix, a story of finding roots and family set in the beautiful French countryside; Skeleton Woman, a mystical tale filmed on the California coast; Come Undone, a French coming of age film; The Fluffer, about a beefy straight guy in gay porn for the money, and Stray Dogs, a Tennessee Williams-type tale set in Appalachia starring Guinivere Turner. Documentaries include Lifetime Guarantee, an hilarious portrait of musical icon Phranc as she enters the world of Tupperware, and History Lessons, the latest from prolific filmmaker Barbara Hammer. Short Film Programs In addition to the award-winning feature films reported on in earlier editions, the festival this year will highlight several programs of short films for many tastes. Included among the films are many which have won awards at festivals around the world. A special program on love around the world called Short on Love showcases films from Portugal, Germany, Great Britain and the US, and includes comedies, animation, and narrative films. Zen and the Art of Landscaping, included in this program, is among the most hysterical films of the festival, while Jigsaw Venus is a unique and unconventional love story which played to rave reviews in Sundance, Berlin and many festivals around the world. Other short programs are entitled Shorts on the Edge, where reality is a little in question for many of the tales, Gay Men in Shorts, and one simply called A Short Take on Life, which includes the award winners, 80 Miles East of Birdland, Zen Tales, and In God We Trust. Discount Tickets Available The festival makes a limited amount of discount ticket packets available. These include the Cinematic Six Pack: 6 tickets for $36 (a savings of $6 over the box office price of $7 per ticket) or the Reel Deal 10-Pack: 10 tickets for $60 (a $10 savings). These discount packages may be ordered by mail using the form on page 23, or by stopping by the festival office next to Radio Shack in the Rehoboth Mall. Since these sell out each year, get them now! For those 60 years of age or older, tickets at the box office during the festival are just $5, so these discount packs are not recommended for them as tickets are even cheaper at the festival than the $6 tickets in these packs.
