EATING Out |
Dos Locos - Delmarvelous Mexican by Barry Becker I was recently whiling away a sunny Sunday afternoon with a long-lost friend and ended up at Dos Locos (10 North First St., Rehoboth Beach) for brunch. The Mexican lasagna was so wonderful, made with tortillas, eggs, cheese and a light tomato sauce, that I decided I had to come back for dinner real soon and check out more of their menu. The dinner menu is quite extensive, with everything you look for in a Mexican seafood restaurant. We began with the house guacamole and, of course, homemade salsa, both of which were fresh and yummy. The Bay skins came highly recommended, so we ordered those, too, the potatoes topped with lump crab and bubbling with melted cheese, dusted with Old Bay and served with sour cream on the side. They were outrageously decadent and spicy. We also tried the shrimp cocktail, which was served with a dipping sauce in a half of an avocado on a bed of greens, the shrimp huge and the sauce a perfect complement! Then, on to the main event. The Chile Rellenos was a deep-fried Pabano pepper bursting with melted cheese and sauce, with just enough spice to give it a kick. We tried the Mexican Plate, a combination platter of a perfect chicken burrito, cheese enchilada and beef taco. All were tasty, fresh and fabulous, served with a spicy side of great black bean chili and rice. And yes, we also tried a third entree, Darryl's Favorite Enchilada, two corn tortillas filled with lump crab and topped with chipotle cream sauce and melted cheese, served with refried beans and rice, which was out of this world. We could see why it was Darryl's favorite! Elsewhere on the menu are quesadillas (including shrimp, crab, and black bean chili, to name a few), burritos and chimichangas, fajitas (sirloin, tuna, scallop, chicken, vegetable, and shrimp), tacos (including spicy clam and fish), and salads. If you're not crazy about Mexican food, there is a very ample American Fare menu as well, including fish and chips, grilled tuna steak, lobster cakes, cheese steaks, grilled chicken and much more, as well as a kids' menu for the little ones. We were too full for dessert this trip (imagine that!) but when I was in for brunch I had the fried ice cream, which was heavenly! They also have flan, margarita cheesecake, chocolate decadence (a chocolate filled brownie with chocolate and cream) and other sweet endings. Fusion Sets Community Table by Fay Jacobs Not only is Fusion (50 Wilmington Ave.) back for its 7th season, but it has a new executive chef and several new ideas. First and foremost, owner and general manager Jonathan Spivak has hired chef Bill Karrow to reinvent the menu. He's staying with Fusion's hallmark creativity (don't worry, you can still get that incredible duck salad!) but giving equal attention to healthy dishes and ingredients. The menu selections and price points are a wider range (several entrees under $20) and there's new art and lighting in the bar area. Ryan Cunningham is the sous chef, and the whole kitchen team is taking its cues from the new chef. But the most innovative idea is the new community table-a 14-seat oasis, (in a premier window spot) where people dining alone or in small groups can come to meet and spend time with other people in the community. You can reserve a seat at the table, or just show up and see what's happening. It's a new idea and Fusion will be watching the results! In this community you never know who'll be dining with you-and what fun it will be. Fusion owner Spivak calls the idea a natural extension of the generosity of the town and its businesses. Along with many other local restaurants and businesses, Fusion has been donating to non-profit fundraisers and events for years. That's one kind of giving back to the community, and the community table is another. Stop by and see who's dining with whom! |
