LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |
by Steve Elkins, Editor |
A couple of weeks ago, Murray and I were working side by side in our office at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center when the phone rang. "Steve Elkins?" a voice inquired, "this is Lady Bunny." "Lady Bunny," I exclaimed with sudden excitement (and loud enough to get Murray's instant attention). "I'm..." she started to say... "I know who you are, I said interrupting her. "We've got a celebrity on the phone," I added with enthusiasm (and for the benefit of all who happened to be within earshot). The gist of the conversation that followed, of course, concerned the details of her up-coming and first time appearance in Rehoboth Beach, but somehow the simple act of talking to Lady Bunny added a little magic to our otherwise long, hard day of Letters' deadline. After she hung up I immediately called Fay Jacobs (our features editor), and her interview with the infamous Lady Bunny appears on page 48 of this issue. If you missed her May 31 performance, Lady Bunny will be returning to the Blue Moon on August 2.
Also returning to the Blue Moon is the annual (and also infamous) Blue Moon Bachelor Auction, benefitting Love 2006. Matching hot men with hot restaurants, the Bachelor Auction not only assures the highest bidders a fun evening out on the town, but also provides them a Love Weekend sponsorship that includes tickets and weekend passes to all the Love events. The Bachelor Auction begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 at the Blue Moon and is a great way to kick off all the July 4th and Love Weekend eventsincluding the Ultimate Love Main Event with dj David Knapp and the sensational Love Groove Retro Ball with dj Mark Thomas, and Martha Wash. For more information about the Bachelor Auction, Love Weekend tickets, passes, and sponsorships, or to volunteer, call CAMP Rehoboth or visit the Love web site www.love-weekend.org. Last year's CAMP Rehoboth follies was made easier by the presence of Ric Kirby as the Follies Skit Coordinator, so it is with mixed feeling that we congratulate him on being the producer of the opening ceremonies for the Chicago Gay Games in July. I say "mixed feelings" because Gay Games and the CAMP Rehoboth Follies are scheduled for the same weekend and our loss is Chicago's gain. Hopefully, Ric will be back for the 2007 Follies. In the meantime, check out the interview with Ric on page 20 to find out what it takes to make the Gay Games gay. (Oh, and by the way, anyone with theatrical experience interested in volunteering for this year's Follies Production Team should contact Murray Archibald at CAMP Rehoboth.) Last year CAMP Rehoboth and the Rehoboth beach film society began a series of mini-film festivals for the GLBT community called Another Take. The third Another Take is scheduled for June 15-17, with the first two films being shown in the upstairs Screening Room at the Movies at Midway (Thursday, June 15, 7 p.m.Strange Fruit; Friday, June 16, 7 p.m., Girl Play), and the third in the CAMP Rehoboth Courtyard (Saturday, June 17, 9 p.m.Wilby Wonderful). For information and reservations call the Rehoboth Beach Film Society at 302-645-9095. See page 22 for more about Another Take. On Saturday, June 17 at the Delaware HIV Consortium's wow awards Gala, CAMP Rehoboth and its staff will be among the organizations and individuals from around the state being honored for achievements in the field of HIV/AIDS. The eventbilled as "an evening in the country to make you say WOWwill be especially interesting because its location (Haskell Barn on Hill Girt Farm) is the setting of M. Night Shyamalan's 2004 film The Village. The HIV Consortium coordinates statewide AIDS services among the various organizations in the state. Our thanks to the Consortium for the honor and for all they do for the HIV/AIDS community in Delaware. Also being honored at the Wow Awards: 6abc, Dan DiGuglielmo, Renee Beaman, Susan Szabo, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Steve Twilley, Cher Przilomski, and Jim Welch. |
