Walk for the Animals at the Beach
Four-legged friends and their two-legged companions will kick-off the beach season in The Delaware Humane Association's (DHA's) Fourth Annual Beach Walk For The Animals on Saturday, April 28. The event will be held on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk at Lake Avenue. Parking is available near the Henlopen Hotel. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m., and the walk will start at 12:00 noon. The walk is the length of the Boardwalk and back (about 2 miles), and walkers are welcome to bring their dog(s). Proceeds from the Beach Walk will benefit DHA and its mission. The registration fee for adults is $15.00 by April 25 ($25.00 the day of the event); $5.00 for children (ages 6-16) pre-registration and the day of the event; children 5 and under are free. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Team rates are $60.00 for a team of 5 or more walkers; $120.00 for 10 or more walkers; $330.00 for 25 or more walkers. Since fundraising is the goal of the Walk for the Animals, DHA asks that all participants raise at least $50.00 in pledges. There will be a post-walk Yappy Hour on Saturday after the walk (approx. 2 p.m.) in the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Courtyard, 37 Baltimore Avenue. Dogs are welcome at the Yappy Hour. Book Signing for Fried & TrueTales from Rehoboth Beach On the heels of the hilarious As I Lay Fryinga Rehoboth Beach Memoir, by Letters columnist Fay Jacobs, released in 2004, comes a second volume of Jacobs' very funny and provocative commentaries. A&M Books of Rehoboth announces the release of Fried & TrueTales from Rehoboth Beach, a peek at Rehoboth life in this gay-friendly and very welcoming community. In addition to Jacobs' collected columns, Fried & True takes you inside the remarkable lives of two Rehoboth Beach icons and literary pioneers. Fay shares her close friendship with legendary feminist author Sarah Aldridge (the pen name of Anyda Marchant). Marchant wrote 14 classic lesbian novels and founded, along with her partner Muriel Crawford, Naiad Pressarguably the most successful feminist publishing house in the country in the 70s and 80s. Fay's friendship with Anyda and Muriel gives readers an extraordinary and very personal glimpse of two long lives bravely and gloriously lived. CAMP Rehoboth Hosts Public Allies Delaware On March 23rd, CAMP Rehoboth hosted a luncheon and non-profit informational workshop at the Community Center for several representatives of the 2007 Public Allies of Delaware. Public Allies Delaware is an AmeriCorps program of the University of Delaware's Center for Community Research and Service. They are the only program in Delaware that creates opportunities for diverse young leaders to strengthen our community through paid professional apprenticeships in nonprofit organizations, leadership training and team service projects. CAMP and ACLU Hold GLBT Town Hall Meeting More than 40 people came out for the CAMP Rehoboth and ACLU-Delaware GLBT Civil Rights Project's town hall meeting in Rehoboth Beach last month. The meeting provided an opportunity for members of our community to share ideas about the current Delaware legislative session and future gay rights plans in the state. Updates were provided on issues concerning relationship recognition, partner benefits, employment non-discrimination, transgender concerns, parenting, and more. Participating in the meeting were Delaware State Representative Pete Schwartzkopf, ACLU-Delaware Executive Director Drew Fennell, Community Legal Aid Managing Attorney Eleanor Kiesel, and Delaware Stonewall President Peter Schott. Next on the agenda is the ACLU-GLBT Lobby Day in Legislative Hall on Thursday, May 3 at 12:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to participate. April Has Been Designated as National Fair Housing Month Governor Ruth Ann Minner, on April 3, 2007, signed a Proclamation recognizing April as Fair Housing Month. Women Build 2007 Begin Work in Sussex County Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's Women Build 2007 will hold its first build day on April 21 at Lot 16 in Concord Village in Seaford. Build days will be Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for approximately three months.
