I think that those of us who live in Rehoboth Beach or who visit very often can forget what that feeling of excitement was like when we first vacationed here. I have been guilty of it myself. I remember, in the early days of visiting, the feeling of excitement when we started getting close to Rehoboth Beach. Later, when we bought a second home here and came back on weekends, I felt a peace come over me as I got closer to my true home. In the past week or so, I have been reminded twice of the "vacationers' excitement." The first was a man telling me that he was on Delaware Avenue and asking how he would get to CAMP Rehoboth but, more importantly, how would he get to Poodle Beach? He had driven through the night to get here and he didn't want to waste any time looking for it! As soon as I mentioned the Queen and Prospect Street signs he seemed reassured. The second phone call was from a man in Manhattan who wanted a recommendation for the "best" resort heresomething right on the ocean with a pool. After that, we covered possible restaurants and the entertainment available that weekend. It was to be the first trip here for him and his partner and he wanted it to be a special time. He was quite impressed with what we have to offer and very excited about his plans. I am quite comfortable about describing lodging, restaurants and entertainment to Rehoboth Beach visitors. I've stayed in many of the hotels before moving here, eat out frequently, and try to attend lots of local entertainment. What I can't describe adequately to potential visitors is Rehoboth Beach's personality, its feeling of home. Several people, seeing me reading the latest Harry Potter book, asked what I thought of it. (They know that I'm a retired librarian.) My answer was that I missed the Hogwarts Academy setting that was the scene of all of the other Harry Potter books. The thing about Hogwarts is that it has almost a personality of its own. The thing about Rehoboth Beach is that it too has a special personality. I can't quite explain it but you understand after you have been here for awhile. Founders' Circle Approximately 150 community members attended groundbreaking on August 18 and the construction bid packages will be reviewed by the Building Committee on August 25. Construction equipment should be on site by mid-September. Recent payments from our members have brought the Founders' Circle totals to $1,377,703.60 pledged and $1,110,624.02 contributed. Founders' Circle members have continued to make the expansion a reality. Beth Fitton is Development Director at CAMP Rehoboth. She may be reached by e-mail at beth@camprehoboth.com. |
