News from the Rehoboth Beach Film Society
Now Showing in the Art House Theater and more! Before switching gears to a summer schedule of outdoor activities, you may want to visit the Art House Theater to see The Lives of Others, the 2006 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. The Lives of Others will screen until May 24 and then the Art House Theater will be on break for the summer. The Lives of Others is a political thriller and human drama which begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and ultimately takes us to 1991, in what is now the reunited Germany. The movie focuses on the horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. The secret police organization, Stasi, conducts extensive surveillance operations against any East German citizen suspected of opposing the Communist regime. When Captain Gerd Weisler begins monitoring the daily life of the playwright Georg Dreyman, he finds himself increasingly unwilling to betray his subject's private moments to his superiors (2006, Runtime: 37 minutes, Rated: R). Stay tuned for information about the Art House Theater's post Labor Day schedule. Currently the Film Society is planning for the Tenth Annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, a major milestone. In addition to great films, we are working to bring celebrities to this year's Festival to celebrate a decade of achievement in the film industry. This year's Festival artwork will soon appear around town on the new poster designed by Siquis Limited. If you've always wanted to know what it is like to be a film critic, join the summer Film Reviews. The Summer Film Reviews offer an opportunity to be a part of the film selection process for the Film Festival. Beginning June 18, the Film Society will host reviews every Monday and Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. until August 14 in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway. Each session will include the screening of a short and a documentary or a feature, time permitting. Reviewers are asked to complete a rating form and may also join in the post film discussions. Festival Program Director Joe Bilancio will facilitate the reviews so you are sure to enjoy stimulating discussions about what factors determine a film's suitability for a Festival. Please understand that film titles and descriptions will not be provided in advance as we want everyone to arrive with an open mind for a new experience. The screenings are open to the public and admission is a suggested $1.00 donation which helps with print traffic management expenses. Thank you in advance for your participation and know that your input is valued.
