Celebrating the Meaning of CAMP
It isn’t too hard to see that the words selected for artists to use as their jumping off point for the 2010 HeART of the Community live auction spell out CAMP: Connection, Adaptation, Metamorphosis, Progression. In honor of the 20th Anniversary, it seemed fitting to generate alternatives to the acronym that defines this community.
These words also illustrate what artists do everyday in their effort to transform the world around them in making connections, making progress, making art. Even our group of artists has transformed as many who have carried the growth of CAMP Rehoboth take different roles.
We couldn’t be prouder of the work that artists do for CAMP Rehoboth, and we hope that they know that we are grateful for them sharing the effort and joy that goes into making art and putting it out there into the world.
With over 200 artists participating in the July 3rd LottoHEART event, we would like to pay special thanks to the dozen artists who have made larger work for the live auction:
J. S. Adams, Julie Borden, Geri Dibiase, Ward Ellinger, Terry Isner, John Bittinger Klomp, Lee Wayne Mills, Linda Minkowski, Jeff Todd Moore, Aina Nergaard-Nammack, Ron Tate, and Phyllis Zwarych.
The live auction will be part of the LottoHEART evening on July 3rd, and anyone attending the event can bid on one of these pieces.
As the art is delivered for the exhibition, I am always struck by the correlations and how it holds together as a body of work. This year is no different. Seen together, this exhibition is actually very cohesive.
Even though they were given four separate words with clearly distinct meanings from which to react, all of the artists weave together pieces into a unifying whole. Several artists do this through a visual mosaic: Aina, John, Ron, Julie, and Ward. Others use collage or patterning to show that disparate pieces can be brought together to the point where we don’t know where the genesis arises: Lee, Jim, and Jeff. The representational art this year is likewise unified by the retelling or creation of myth to illustrate our evolution. Terry, Linda, Geri, and Phyllis each independently seek the wonder(land) of our genesis, our spirit, our story in their works full of myth and whimsy.
I realize that I’ve used genesis twice in describing this group of work, and maybe that is not accidental. In its 20 years existence, CAMP Rehoboth has evolved from the initiative that brought it into being into something different. With art, there is always a moment when the genesis and process arrive at temporary stasis. It is not a complete stasis because what each of us brings to the experience of art keeps it evolving long beyond the artist’s touch. What you see in a work of art is unique to you as part of the experience. What it means is what it means to you.
We hope that you will join us to experience the art on Saturday, June 26 from 4-6pm for our sneak preview reception at CAMP Rehoboth honoring all of the artists.
These Heart of the Community paintings are among the art to be auctioned at LottoHEART by (from top): Julie Borden, Lee Wayne Mills, Terry Isner, Ward Ellinger, Jeffrey Todd Moore, Ron Tate, and Linda Minkowski.
LottoHEART Online!
Mark your Calendar! On June 25th, we’ll put the link to our Web Gallery on the CAMP Rehoboth website for you to enjoy. There is a lot of great art to love, so it will really help you to do some homework. Look at the art in person and in the spectacular web gallery where you can view the art, add your favorites to a “cart,” and order them in the rank you’d like them. Then you can print out your personalized Favorites List to assist you.
Submit (and print) a Proxy if you’re not able to join us in person.
We’ll also have plenty of printed sheets to help you do this at the event. Why is this important?
When it comes to playing LottoHEART, you will only have 30 seconds (maybe...depending on Christopher Peterson’s whim!) when your ticket number is called to shout out the number for your art (or your ticket goes back in the fishbowl). Think of your Favorites List like a bingo card where you will cross off works when they are selected—until BINGO—your turn and you will know exactly which number to shout out. Or maybe not. But it will be fun.
The LottoHEART Web Gallery will be online June 25. Get to it by clicking the LottoHEART link on the CAMP Rehoboth web site. Pay a visit, select your favorites, print your preferences, and come and play! On July 4th, we’ll reveal the names of the artists, their websites, and gallery affiliations if you want more information on who participated in this event.
