Welcome to summer 2010 in Rehoboth Beach! This is the memorial day issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth and with it we continue our year-long, 20th Anniversary celebration for both our magazine and our organization. I love living in Rehoboth Beach all year long, but there’s still something special about Memorial Day and the start of a new summer season—especially the return of so many old friends, and opportunities to make new ones! From our spot here in the heart of “beautiful Baltimore Avenue,” we witness the excitement building on our street and in our town as everyone gears up for the start of the new season. Be sure to check out the map listings in the center pages of each issue of Letters, or go to the Rehoboth Beach Guide at camprehoboth.com (under the “at the beach” button for a handy list of businesses and services available in the Rehoboth Beach area. Want to know what’s happening around town? Check out CAMPdates and Doug Yetter’s CAMParts column. Also, check out our online calendar to keep up with CAMP Rehoboth events, programs, and activities at the Community Center.
On Sunday, May 30, CAMP Rehoboth will again partner with the fabulous folks at Ladies 2000 for their annual Memorial Day weekend party—this year at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. During the recent CAMP Rehoboth Women’s FEST, event chair Fay Jacobs got us all together for a big t-dance (wow, can those ladies party!), and that partnership is continuing into the summer season with a portion of the dance proceeds benefiting CAMP Rehoboth. The party starts at 4 p.m. and goes to 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door.
CAMP Rehoboth members are a key component to the success of CAMP Rehoboth and our ability to plan for the future. Our members provide the support we need to keep the Community Center open and to continue our many programs and activities. If you enjoy PBS and NPR, you know that membership drives are the price we pay for the quality programs they produce. That’s true for most non-profit organizations and CAMP Rehoboth is no exception. This summer the Membership Committee here at CAMP will be launching a summer membership drive that includes a Beach House Challenge with a Letters cover as a prize. Please consider joining or renewing your membership at the highest level you can afford—it really makes a difference!
If it’s Memorial Day weekend, July fourth is not too far behind, and Independence Day in Rehoboth is huge! From fireworks to fun, the town explodes in a red, white and blue frenzy of festivities. Make plans now to be here when DJ Joe Gauthreaux rocks the house for Love 2010 on July 4. On July 3, art and high CAMP collide in the one-of-a-kind LottoHEART Game Show hosted by the (also one-of-a-kind) Christopher Peterson. Sponsor and ticket information for both events is available on the CAMP Rehoboth web site. For more details about both events, see CAMPmatters.
June is pride month, and CAMP Rehoboth will celebrate it with a special exhibition featuring the work of Delaware LGBT artists (both residents and seasonal visitors). The exhibition will run from May 26 - June 23. A mid-run reception will be held at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center on June 12, so plan to stop by and see the show, and then enjoy the MOSIAC art walk happening all over town.
Congratulations to the Rehoboth/Lewes chapter of the Black Tie Club for hosting Black Tie International 2010 here in Rehoboth Beach. We love to see events that bring new people to the Rehoboth area or promote Rehoboth as an LGBT destination—like the recent Rehoboth Bump! episode on Logo.
