9-11 and Pride
I sent in my column later than usual this issue because I was trying to write it on September 11. Ain’t happening. I’m filled with such a sense of loss that it’s tough to type through the tears. I’m reminded deeply of almost losing my sweet Greer in a car accident two years ago. As awful as these events were, good things came from them. I was reading in the Washington Post of the countless wonderful organizations that have been started by those who were touched by 9-11. For me personally, my gratitude for still having Greer in my life has allowed me to be less guarded with my feelings, and now I don’t hesitate to express my love to her and our continuously supportive family and friends. I’m also more appreciative of where I live. My life feels so rich being here at the beach. Even after five years, I’m still in awe whenever I stand in the sand and look out over the Atlantic. Thank you, dear readers, for allowing me to share.
Out on Route 1, Jakes Wayback Hamburgers is now open (near Giant Foods) and is rumored to have amazing milkshakes and fabulous onion rings to go with those quarter pounders. According the Rehoboth Foodie, Wu’s Kitchen, a Chinese carry out will open next door and almost directly across the street is the Big Chill Surf Cantina (near the Sea Shell shop) which recently opened.
If you haven’t encountered the crater in the parking lot at Tanger Midway, you’ve been lucky. That huge hole that has mucked up the parking lot for what feels like years is going to be a bank. What a snooze! Ah well….
I’m sad to say that Romeo’s on Wilmington Avenue has already closed. I’ll miss their awesome breakfasts.
One of the fun things about living here year-round is all the restaurant specials that appear in the fall. All your favorite establishments want to keep the locals coming back, so they offer specials that allow us to eat out very inexpensively once the crowds have gone. Two sites that list those specials are RehobothFoodie.com and LocalsOnlyBlog.com. Hadley McGregor writes the Locals Only Blog and her list, which comes out in the fall, is famous around these parts! And some things are actually FREE! Gelato Gal will be giving away free gelato samples from noon to 6 pm on September 17.
Also on September 17 is Delaware Pride which just gets bigger and better every year! This year the headliner is “Tell it to my Heart” Taylor Dane. Besides the great line up of entertainment on the main stage, you’ll love walking around, checking out all the booths, and running into friends from outside the area. Don’t miss it!
If crowds just aren’t your thing, pop over to Lewes on September 17 for the Lewes Artists’ Studio Tour which allows you to meet 17 regionally and nationally acclaimed artists in their working environment. Or check out Taste the Fruit of the Vine, a benefit for The Sussex County Community Outreach Program being held at the Lewes Historical Society Complex.
Coming October 2 is the Celebrity Chefs’ Beach Brunch at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey, benefiting Meals on Wheels.
And speaking of October, Halloween is my favorite holiday. Have any plans? Let me know what’s going on.
