A Little Bit of This and That
It’s so easy to write about new restaurant openings, the premiere of new shops and big events like Sundance, that I forget to mention all the lesser-known-cool-things that are happening as well. Let me see if I can redeem myself!
For movie lovers, The Movies at Midway have started showing films as early as 10:30 in the morning. So if it’s raining and you don’t feel like shopping—you can hang out with Angelina Jolie or Tom Cruise. Or, you can channel your inner Ebert by helping the film festival committee screen candidates for the fall Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. These Film Festival Review Sessions are open to the public, so get the scoop at the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s website and join in the fun.
For history lovers, Jolly Trolley has teamed up with the Rehoboth Beach Museum to offer tours of downtown Rehoboth that include the Anna Hazzard house, one of the original “tent” houses in the area. If you’d rather walk than ride, the Museum will debut their walking history tours on June 26.
During the summer, the Lewes Historical Society offers nine different tours including a maritime tour, a kayak tour, and a haunted history tour. A lot can happen in 383 years! They also offer a History Happy Hour series on Fridays at 4 p.m. in the Hotel Rodney and it’s free! And don’t miss the annual Lewes Chautauqua event (June 15-19) which features re-enactors who take on the personas of historical figures. This year includes Harriet Tubman, Clara Barton, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman and Delawarean James Elbert, a soldier in the United States Colored Troops.
Sports enthusiasts might enjoy the Lewes Vintage Base Ball Club which plays by 1864 rules, i.e. the ability to catch the ball on one bounce for an out, and no gloves permitted for fielders. The club plays its home matches at the Lewes Campus of the University of Delaware. Runners should check out the Seashore Striders Running Club which hosts year-round weekly fun runs in addition to 50 other athletic events during the year.
Foodies will love the Eating Rehoboth or Eating Lewes walking food tours where participants get to sample food and drink at five different restaurants (and one specialty shop), all while being entertained with historical tidbits from guides like yours truly.
Music lovers should check out the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand schedule. The lineup includes everything from country to big band to tribute bands that celebrate Bon Jovi and the Eagles. Dozens and dozens of eateries feature music most Fridays and Saturdays; check local papers for listings.
And there’s always more to local festivals than what meets the eye. In addition to seventy sea glass artists, the Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival (June 28-29) also has live music, fun food, and a specialist on-site to identify your treasures. I stood and watched a glass expert do this one year, and it was unexpectedly fascinating.
Theater lovers enjoy offerings from Clear Space Theater Company, such as The Full Monty, Oliver!, and Sordid Lives; or the delights presented by the Possum Point Players of Georgetown.
I know the minute I send this column for publication, I’m going to think of something else I should have included, and I’m sure you will too! Let me know at the email below. Cheers!
