Sundance 2015—Labor Day in RB
One of the region’s largest and wildest dance clubs exists for one night only, but—like Brigadoon—comes back every year. Sundance, now in its 28th year, is part of CAMP Rehoboth’s two-day celebration held each Labor Day weekend at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. This year’s event, The Super Magic Rainbow Glitter Ball, is expected to be the largest and best yet. It will take place on September 6 and will raise funds for CAMP Rehoboth, as it operates a full-service community center; offers a variety of activities, cultural events, service projects, and educational programs; and advocates for a community of inclusion in Rehoboth Beach.
The Sundance fun starts at 8 p.m., with dancing until 2 a.m., and an open bar all night. Nationally known DJ/Remixer Joe Gauthreaux will hand-pick contemporary progressive tunes and provide his own original content. As one of the most sought-after DJs in the industry, Gauthreaux (pronounced “go trow”) has a resume full of club appearances and main events that span the last 15 years. He has remixed the likes of Frenchie Davis, Kristine W., Bimbo Jones, Ne-Yo, and Justin Bieber. His 2014 debut single “Bye Felicia,” featuring Mitch Amtrak, reached number five on the Billboard Dance Chart. Gauthreaux has played all over the country, including in San Francisco for Gay Pride and in Florida for Gay Days.
The lighting for Sundance will again be provided by renowned lighting designer Paul Turner. Turner is a touring entertainment lighting director and moving light programmer who has handled lighting design for theatre, concerts, television, holiday spectaculars, military shows, and sporting events. He is currently lighting director for Robin Thicke.
For those who want to make a weekend of it, the first night of Sundance (September 5) is the Sundance Auction and Cocktail Buffet, which features an open bar all night, food by Plate Catering, and an amazing array of travel, art, event, dining, and gift items, all up for bid. Items on auction this year include a spectacular all-inclusive seven-night luxury river cruise (with a variety of dates and itineraries) donated by Accent On Travel, and a five-day San Francisco and Napa Valley trip that includes airfare, accommodations at incredible hotels, and more. Plus Olivia is offering a Caribbean Escape this winter. Participants can choose to attend the dance, or the auction, or both. Tickets are $45 for one night or $80 for both events.
Sundance 2015 Diamond Sponsors are: Dos Locos, Accent On Travel, Karen Gustafson—Move2Rehoboth.com, and Sea Bova Associates. Gold sponsors are: CIO Federal IT, Ketel One Vodka, Maplewood Dental Associates, Morris James LLP, Outlet Liquors, and Signarama.
The Sundance event began in 1988, inspired by the need to do something in response to the growing AIDS epidemic and the terrible devastation it was causing. Funds raised by the benefit went toward education and health services in the Rehoboth community. In the 26 years since the first Sundance, the event has raised over two million dollars, first for AIDS and later for the wellness of the entire community.
Sundance continues to raise much-needed funds for CAMP Rehoboth. Individuals and organizations can be a part of the event through ticket purchases or sponsorships, which start at just $100. All proceeds from the event benefit CAMP Rehoboth (a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation) and support the activities and programs it provides to the Rehoboth community.
