The rain and humidity may have wreaked havoc on our pretty little summer hair-dos last weekend, but the Rehoboth party scene remained unscathed and in full swingwith everything from impromptu get-togethers to larger scale fundraising and dance events.
One of last weekends most notable events was the welcome return of guest D.J. Paul Stewart at Cloud 9. Paul spun records each evening from Friday to Monday, proving that a hot dance party doesnt have to take place on a large dance floor. "Its not the size that counts!" explained 2 Blackstones David Martel with a chuckle. Size did matter, however, over at the Renegades "Lost World Party" where the musicthanks to guest D.J. Tommy Waltonwas of Jurassic proportions. Another Renegade highlight was the new cappuccino bar provided by Coffee Mill owners Wayne Lemon and Steve Webster. If espresso is what you need to get you through a long night of dancing, then check it out.
It must have been the rainy weather that inspired everyone to call 10 Georges Chris Riss last weekend, but the calls werent to find out where the parties were. The dismal weather sparked a creative frenzy of party-theme ideas which led to the booking of almost all the time slots on Chriss social calendar. Chris promises that there are still spaces left for socially ambitious houses to host a party. If youre worried that your backyard isnt big enough, then pay a visit to Savannahs or Gourmet by the Sea to inquire about using their party-thirsty courtyards. There are even several empty retail spaces, including the old Chop Shop building, that are just screaming to have a party thrown in them. On another note: For those of you who werent calling 10 George to schedule a party, and instead, wanted information about hunky new housemate Kevin Vandergrift, please stop tying up the lineTom Minnuto is about to make the jump from Chris Riss protge to full-fledged mover and shaker and needs the phone to complete his final tele-promoter exam.
Last Sunday, former soul train dancer Ken Stears hosted "a day of beauty"a popular Rehoboth past-time at his 114 Strawberry Way home. Ken offered all the basic services of a full salon, including a bonus caramel facial peel that he introduced earlier that day at 10 Georges birthday brunch for Mike Herr. The birthday brunchers from 11 Robinson and 2 Blackstone were so impressed with Kens caramel peelwhich is more appropriately used as an apple dipthat they promised to feature it at their upcoming house parties for all of Rehoboth to try. Later that evening, the LOVE97 kick-off party at Savannahs drew a large crowd despite a few raindrops and competition from Tony Burns birthday bash for Conrad Welch at 7 Lake Comegys. Tonys party drew approximately 250 people all of whom Tony must buy individual sponsorships for since he kept them from attending the LOVE97 fundraiser.
So far, this summer truly belongs to the women, who made their lasting impression on Rehoboth over the Memorial Day holiday. Starting things off last weekend was the new Plumb Loco on First Avenue. The bar was overflowing with women last Friday and featured live music by "Cindy" on Saturday. The Frogg Pond featured the popular D.C. band "Common Bond" Saturday evening while Jam Foks and DJ Tracy spent the night spinning at the Convention Centers Splash 97 event. Over at the Renegade, there were two ladies tea events, both from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with Sundays attendance reaching 800. Renegade Manager Wayne Hodge reported that he "had never been in one room with that much testosterone before."
This weekend, look for the 25 or so Washington Wetskins (DCs gay water polo team) on the beach and on the sidewalk in front of CAMP Rehoboth selling raffle tickets as a fundraising endeavor. Rumor is theyll be bunking in a large house on the north side of town. If youre lucky, you may be invited to a private after-hours party at the house where watersports will be the late night game of choice.
The first of two things to put on your checklist this week includes sponsoring LOVE97, Rehoboths dance benefit for Food & Friends of D.C., Sussex County AIDS Committee (SCAC) and Baltimores HERO. Sponsors receive a ticket to the July 5th open bar main event, an invite to Bill Goldsteins sponsor party in Rehoboth July 4th, and a LOVE97 t-shirt. You can sponsor or buy tickets for LOVE97 at CAMP Rehoboth or through Tom Minnuto and his trusty clipboard on the beach. Tickets for the event can also be purchased through Box Office Tickets, 301-738-7073 or 800-494-TIXS and Lambda Rising. The next important thing is to get your house listed in BEACH BOOK 97. Chris Riss and Tom Minnuto are taking names, addresses and phone numbers on the beach, but this is the last weekend to get your house included. If you miss these guys on the beach, then stop over at CAMP Rehoboth to fill out your form. Last year, BEACH BOOK 96 listed more than 260 beach residences, and this years is even bigger. Join in on the fun; youll be happy you did!
Finally, please direct your attention to the young wizard pictured here. Isnt he cute, moustache and all? This photo was taken about 10 years ago in the restaurant he owned called Canyon, which is now home to the new lesbian hang-out Plumb Loco. Can you figure out who it is? Look closely, he just may be sitting next to you on the beach.
