Get out the summer whites, folks, Memorial Day has come (and gone) and it is now officially high season on the Delmarva Peninsula. Only, someone please share that fact with the weather fairies. As I write this, its just a bit too nippy outside. I am not giving up hope, however, and feel fully confident that by the time this issue hits the streets, there will be sunshine and warm skies smiling down upon us.
Tonight I am participating in what has become a yearly ritualproviding sensitivity training to the Rehoboth summer police in dealing with hate crimes. For five years now, CAMP Rehoboth has worked closely with Chief of Police Creig Doyle to provide the police force with a better understanding of how to respond to crimes directed against lesbians and gay men because of our sexual orientation. It is also a way for the police to get to know more about the gay and lesbian community and its importance to the City of Rehoboth Beach. In this issue, Hastings Wymans Capital Letters column reminds us that fair treatment of our community by the police in many of our largest (and gayest) cities, cannot always be taken for granted. We are fortunate to have a police chief and department anxious to work with us to make this a better community for all.
Everyone, Im sure, knows by now that LOVE 97 is coming up on the fourth of July weekend. This great event, created by George Domurot and chaired this year by Charlie Codacovi, unites the communities of Rehoboth, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia, with proceeds going to Food and Friends, SCAC, HERO, and the AIDS Information Network. Part of the draw of Rehoboth has always been its ability to bring people from different cities together, and LOVE especially reminds us of those connections. Its an event not to be missed. Advance tickets, $35, can be purchased at Lambda Rising, CAMP Rehoboth, or through Box Office Tickets (301) 738-7073 or (800) 494-TIXS.
While were talking about LOVE 97, Joyce Felton, Rob Dick and the crew at the Blue Moon (with the help of CAMP Rehoboth and many of the areas finest restaurants,) invite you to join them for the 1997 Bachelor Auction on Saturday, June 14, at 5:30 p.m. Each "bachelor" comes with dinner for two at a fabulous restaurant, with the rest of the evening...well, that depends on the winds of fate. Who knows, maybe LOVE is in the air! Proceeds from the auction will benefit LOVE 97.
And, while were talking about fundraisers, its never too early to mention that plans for SUNDANCE97 are underway. If youre interested in being a host or sponsor for this years event, call the CAMP office at (302) 227-5620 for more information.
One final reminder or just in case you havent heard, this seasons BEACH BOOK deadline is June 1. If you want to be reached during the summer of 97, this is the place to be. BEACH BOOK forms can be found at CAMP Rehoboth, 39 Baltimore Avenue.
Enough talk about all of that for now. The sun is finally shining down on Baltimore Avenue, and I think its about time to move the office out into the courtyard. Stop by and visit!
