Relax!!! A Massage Will Do You Good! |
by Fay Jacobs |
Id never had a massage before. Id hear other folks tout the marvelous benefits of massage and watch people close to me savor the experience, but somehow I never quite got the nerve (yes, I guess I was a little apprehensive) to try it. So volunteering to write a first person article for LETTERS on the Rehoboth Holistic Center in Rehoboth was my way of facing down what I was sure were my own silly demons. Therefore I made an appointment at the Holistic Center where Kathleen Donelan and Konrad Noebel have a comfortable, and relaxed workspace. Located at 26 Baltimore Avenue, above Dream Cafe, the center has three rooms set up with massage tables and soothing lighting and music. Recognizing that I was a teensy weensy bit nervous, Kathleen put me at ease right away, giving me a choice of music and telling me that shes given Swedish or Deep Tissue massages to folks in all manner of dress, including someone who insisted on keeping a sweat suit on. After I filled out paperwork about my health and phy-sical condition (jittery at that moment) Kathleen and I decided that she would concentrate her therapeutic skills on making my computer-stressed shoulder feel better and provide a relaxing Swedish Massage for the rest of me. Well, Kathleen put me at ease so well that I practically fell asleep. She did wonders for my shoulder, too, and her sense of humor kept me relaxed. She reported that certain of her stretching motions would make me taller. "Let me know when you get to the stuff that makes me thinner," was my reply. When she got to my ears(!) I was surprised that shed bother, but Kathleen told me that a massage without getting the ears would be like washing a car without hitting the hubcaps. I conceded the point. And, even when reminded me that my car was on a meter on Baltimore Avenue, and I had no idea the status of the meter....I was so relaxed I didnt run out searching for quarterswhich is really, really relaxed. Meanwhile, in an adjacent room, Konrad was giving Bonnie her Swedish Massage, which shed been anticipating with glee all week. The verdict? Konrad is great at his job and she cant wait to schedule her next relaxing visit. My verdict? Exactly the same! Im a convert! And as I sit typing this report, my shoulder is pain-free for the first time in ages.
