Going Once! Going Twice! The SUNDANCE Auction |
Its Labor Day Weekend. Its SUNDANCE. So, it must be AUCTION time once again! As most of you know by now, the first night of SUNDANCE 98 is the silent and live auction complete with an open bar and a cocktail buffet under the direction of Joyce Felton and her extraordinary crew at the Blue Moon Restaurant.
These last couple of weeks before SUNDANCE, the auction items keep pouring in. Many of the donors have discovered not only is it a great way to give to charity, its also great publicity for their businessesespecially the large live auction items. A business owner cant help but be thrilled when the crowd goes wild and a fast paced bidding war breaks out. Here are just a few of the things we think the crowd will be excited about this year. In his column in the last issue of LETTERS, Barry Becker speculated on just how Abizaks and Something Special could possibly top their donations last year. Well, it seems they have. Though it will not be available for viewing until a few days before the event, Anne Husack and John Sansone of Something Special commissioned another one-of-a-kind glass sculpture of a red AIDS Awareness Ribbon. This year its by artist Richard Goldhagen. According to John, Barry Entner, the artist who created last years sensation which sold for $4,000, studied under Goldhagen. We cant wait to see it. John tells us that it will be on display in the window of their store at 46 Baltimore Avenue during the week before SUNDANCE. John and Pam Sadler, the owners of Abizaks, always dazzle us. The next time you pass their store at 208 Rehoboth Avenue, check out their beautiful new sign. They tell us that they are basically recreating the sign for the auction. That doesnt mean theyre donating a signit means theyre giving a whole room full of furniture that looks very much like their sign. The package will include lamps, tables, plus a sofa with pillows. Take a peek at the incredible blue sofa in their front window. It seems there is always at least one novelty item that really catches our imagination. This year, all you Jackie "O" fans get ready, SUNDANCE hosts Joe Zuber and Darryl Ciarlante rescued the backdrop used at Sothebys auction of her estate. The banner, approximately seven feet square, is done in a blue and black duotone with Jackies face and just the words, "The Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis" at the top, and "Sothebys" at the bottom. If you loved Jackie as much as most of us, can you resist it? Once again, Melissa Clink, proprietor of At Melissas Bed and Breakfast, has joined forces with the Blue Moon and Dogfish Head to create a fabulous Rehoboth weekend vacation package for twelve. Thats right, twelve! Its an instant party and always a popular SUNDANCE item. On the clothing front, Carltons on Rehoboth Avenue has long been known for their impeccable good taste and full line of clothing, so their SUNDANCE 98 Auction donation should come as no surprise. For the second year in a row and just in time for the fall social seasona beautiful and elegant tuxedo. And, when youre all dressed and feeling fabulous, what better way to start the evening than with a martini in a Waterford martini glass just like the ones donated by the Wooden Indian. From all over the Rehoboth area and beyond, the auction items keep coming inand, of course, rumors abound. We hear that David Schaefer of Beach Essentials, one of the great new stores this season, is giving a beautiful pine armoire. Biff Bartron of Twist, another Baltimore Avenue addition, walked into CAMP with a carved Moroccan horse head on a black base. Jeremy Peters of TECHboy has promised a computer, plus a five night vacation at any of the Crowne Plaza Hotels in the world. Brooks Long of Nassau Gallery is still trying to decide just which painting he thinks will bring the highest price in the live auction. Leo Chisholm of Leo James Salon in Rehoboth just called to say he is donating one full year of hair services, including color! The list goes on and on, and its impossible in a few short paragraphs to name the many more wonderful items that promise to make the SUNDANCE 98 Auction an exciting event. No matter what your tasteor the status of your bank accountyou can be sure there will be something to tickle your fancy. From airline tickets to an Ocean Cruise for two to Fantasy Fest in Key West to what has to be the worlds largest Teddy Bear from Bear on he Beach, plus a wide range of jewelry, sunglasses, clothing, books, housewares, and dinners at your favorite restaurants, theres something for everyone. So Saturday, September 5, when auctioneer Ben Killebrew steps onto the stage, get ready, get set, and gobecause the item you cant live without is sure to be going... going... gone! Colors of Life As was done the last two years, the original of Murray Archibalds SUNDANCE paintingthis year titled Colors of Lifewill also be a big item in the live auction. But if the bidding gets a little beyond your means, signed, limited edition prints are once again available for $45. And, in case you missed previous years, additional prints may be purchased, two for $70, or the entire set for $100. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of all prints will go to SUNDANCE. |
