SCAC "AIDS 101" Meets May 11
The Sussex County AIDS Committee (SCAC) will offer a one-evening course entitled "AIDS 101" on Monday, May 11, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. The two-hour class will be held at the SCAC office, located at 107A South Street in Rehoboth Beach DE. The class is free and is open to the general public. "HIV infection and AIDS continues to present a challenge to all of our communities," stated SCAC Executive Director Glen C. Pruitt. "Delaware consistently ranks sixth or seventh in the nation in terms of the rate of AIDS cases in our population. When we look at the rate of infection per 100,000 people, Delawares rate is greater than even Californias!" One of the most powerful tools in the fight against AIDS is education, and SCAC has committed itself to helping in that fight. Six times a year, the organization offers an "AIDS 101" class. The class gives basic information about HIV/AIDS, its transmission, and its prevention. There is also time available in the class for participants to ask their own questions about whatever issues are on their minds. The class is taught by Hank Barczak, Immediate Past President of the SCAC Board of Directors and a certified HIV/AIDS Educator. The class is provided free of charge, but pre-registration is suggested. Participants who complete the two-hour class will be given a certificate of achievement. To register or to get more information, please call the SCAC office at 302-644-1090. Sister to Sister Conference for African American Women The Second Annual Health Conference for Rural African American Women will be held on May 22 and 23, 1998, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day. The conference takes place in the Price Building at Delaware State University in Dover. Admission to the conference is free and includes lectures by guest speakers as well as workshops on topics ranging from acupuncture to HIV and teen pregnancy prevention. Registration is required. For more information or to register, contact Debbie Cheatwood of the KSAP program at Children & Families First (856-2388, ext. 151). The conference is designed to bring African American communities together to identify issues, find solutions, build leadership and enhance personal skills. Individuals will be encouraged to change behaviors to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
