God Said Ha! (And You Can Too!) |
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the award-winning docu-drama God Said Ha! at its upcoming monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, at Dogfish Head, 320 Rehoboth Ave. God is just one of many festival circuit favorites that the Society hopes to acquire for the Second Annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, November 10-14.
Written and directed by veteran Saturday Night Live comedienne Julia Sweeney, God Said Ha! won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Film at the 1998 Seattle International Film Festival. "We tried to get the film last year," said festival director Barry Becker, "but it was so booked that were just now getting our hands on it. This screening will give us some good feedback from our community, and will help us plan the festival program this year." In her feature debut, Sweeney brings us a richly human one-woman show dealing with lifes hardships. After saving her money and moving to L.A., Sweeney found a cozy Hollywood bungalow and got comfortable in her new home. But her brother Mikes cancer diagnosis brought the whole family to live in her home as he battled his sickness. As though dealing with her folks werent enough, life seems to find other ways of challenging her. And just when she thinks shes reached her limits, she is herself diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer. In an ironic and funny look at life, Sweeney delivers a monologue that, although emotional and touching, describes her struggles with great optimism and humor. The Societys monthly meeting offers a chance for the community to help select a film that may appear in the festival. Between now and mid-September, the Film Society is offering many opportunities to view films submitted and help select the winners. "We anticipate over 300 submissions this year, to program about 100 films," Becker adds. "We cant guarantee that every entry is another Smoke Signals, but we can promise that youll have a good time with people who are passionate about film and enhancing the cultural landscape of our community." Film review is every Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Film Society office at the Rehoboth Mall, and on other nights at alternate locations.
