The Way I See It
For me, this issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth always marks the real beginning of the summer season because now we return to our biweekly publication schedule. Look for a new issue of Letters every other Friday from now through Labor Day weekend. To catch up with past issues or read the current one online, go to the CAMP Rehoboth Web site at camprehoboth.com. For the latest in what’s happening at CAMP Rehoboth, visit Facebook at facebook.com/camprehoboth.communitycenter.
Tony Burns and his camera are a familiar part of life in Rehoboth Beach. Since the late 1970s, Tony has documented social life in the area, and recently, donated his entire collection of photographs to the CAMP Rehoboth library. On Saturday, May 22, we will host a reception from 4-6 p.m., to celebrate Tony’s gift and his generous renovation of the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center library. All are welcome.
Celebrating diversity, as we frequently say, has always been at the heart of the mission of CAMP Rehoboth, and our new and improved space is providing multiple opportunities to do just that. In the last week alone, the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center hosted the US Census Bureau for two days of training; Beebe Medical Center’s Integrative Health Department, for a four day seminar; and a recent performance art piece that included poetry, art, and yes, even a polka band (The Wanderers). Whether using the large multi-purpose room, or one of our smaller conference rooms, the Center welcomes community groups and organizations of all kinds, and at the same time continues to provide space for our own activities and programs including: meetings; workshops; the CAMP Chorus, the CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Discussion Group (we have a men’s group, as well, but it meets at Epworth UMC); Smokers Anonymous; AA; NA; a transgender group, and more.
July 4th weekend is a big time for all of us here in Rehoboth Beach and especially so for our many volunteers. On Saturday, July 3, LottoHEART returns to the Convention Center with its unique blend of art and camp. On Saturday, July 4, the Convention Center doors will open on the 16th annual Love Dance—this year called July4LOVE4all. Sponsor and ticket information is available at camprehoboth.com.
For all you runners out there, plans are underway for a 5K run to be included in this year’s Sundance activities. Under the guiding hands of Andy Staton and Chris Beagle, it looks like the event will be scheduled the weekend before Sundance to officially kick-off the Sundance festivities. Andy and Chris, along with many other CAMP Rehoboth Board and Council members are working to develop an exciting new lineup of events and social activities for CAMP Rehoboth. If you’re passionate about running, contact Chris or Andy and get involved in the Sundance 5K. If you’re passionate about something else, check out the list of CAMP Rehoboth Council members on our Web site and talk to one of them about getting involved in an existing program or project—or design your own—we love new energy and enthusiasm.
Bob Yesbek is writing a new column for Letters titled “Before the Beach,” that tells the story of what members of our beach community did before relocating to the Rehoboth area. If you missed the fascinating story of Emmy winning John Potthast in the last issue of Letters, check it out online. In this issue, Bob talks to Susan Jimenez of Guardian Property Management. Nothing happens at CAMP Rehoboth without the work of our amazing volunteers. The CAMP Rehoboth Women’s FEST was a big success this year because of the dedicated work of the FEST Committee and its many volunteers. Our thanks to all!
