This is the July 4th issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth, and with its publication we celebrate, not just Independence Day, but the real beginning of the “high” season here in Rehoboth Beach. Sure, the official start of the summer season is Memorial Day weekend, but we all know that July and August is when everything really kicks into high gear. All over town, excitement was building up to the holiday weekend, and every nightspot has a full line-up of entertainment and fun from now through the end of the summer. Our little town has got great restaurants, theater, art, house parties, dances, and much more. To keep up with what’s happening in the area, check out CAMPdates; for a special guide to visual and performance art, see CAMP Arts.
My job as Executive Director of CAMP Rehoboth puts me in the unique position of working with all the different parts of our community. That means life is a balancing act at times, and that I’m called upon to fill many roles. One of my favorite is “honorary lesbian,” a title I’ve earned working on many of the various women’s events in our area, including Women’s FEST, our partnership with Ladies 2000, and our annual CAMP Rehoboth Golf Classic. The Sixth Annual Golf Classic took place on Friday, June 24 at the Marsh Island Golf Club and benefited CAMP Rehoboth, MCC, and the West Rehoboth Youth Program. The event is the perfect example of how having the right people at the helm of a project makes it smooth sailing for all involved. We are fortunate to have Evie Simmons and Barb Thompson as chairs of the Golf Classic, and I am very grateful for their commitment and service to CAMP Rehoboth. For more on the Golf Classic see the "In Brief" and CAMPshots pages of this issue.
The recent passage of the Delaware Civil Union Act has many of us around the state working on plans to provide usable and accurate information about civil unions and the impact they will have on all areas of our lives—from legal and financial matters to caterers, DJs, and florists. I’ve mentioned before that CAMP Rehoboth is working on a Guide to Civil Unions with Equality Delaware, but we are also looking for ways to work with area lawyers, financial planners, health advisors, and ministers, to ensure that all our questions will be answered.
The weekend before the 4th of July was a busy one here at CAMP Rehoboth, and the CAMP Courtyard was bustling. On Saturday night, Fairway Mortgage held a dance to raise money for cancer; on Sunday, many in our community gathered to celebrate the memory of Kevin Medwedeff. It was a summer weekend like many others, but it reminded me how important it is to provide a public space that welcomes everyone. The CAMP Courtyard is a perfect example, and most of us probably take it for granted, but it takes work, money, and time to maintain and operate. Membership in CAMP Rehoboth makes it possible for us to continue to operate the CAMP Courtyard and the Community Center space. Please consider becoming a member of CAMP Rehoboth if you are not, or upgrading your existing membership to a higher level.
Summer is a busy time for us and full of events. The 4th of July weekend, of course, is all about Love—Red Love, Blue Love, and Lady Love—plus the Studio 54th of July Pool Party that benefits CAMP Rehoboth as well. After Love, don’t miss: Two Comics—One Voice (the stand-up comedy of Bob Smith and Eddie Sarfaty) performed by Eddie Sarfaty at CAMP Rehoboth on July 9; and the return of the Bruce Pfeufer/Mini Bear Graphics production of the DC Cowboys at the RB Convention Center on July 30. All event tickets are available for purchase online or by calling 302-227-5620.
