This is the time of year when too many people have too much time on their hands. Not being one of them, I know this is indeed true because so many of you were kind enough in the past few weeks to say things to me like "You know what you should write about this issue is...."
Just so we get this out of the way right up front and have some closure and healing on it before we continue, I didnt listen to any of you. But thank you for sharing.
This is also the time of year when weekend visitors who continue to come to the beach look at you warily and ask ever so seriously and with great concern in their voice "Do you stay here for the winter?" and when you say why yes, of course, the concern deepens as they whisper "But what do you do here?"
Well, we just cut loose with reckless abandon, thats what we do. We turn left at intersections off Rehoboth Avenue all winter, just because we can now. We park. Wherever we want. We just drive around and park, because we can do that now, too. We ride up and down Route 1 just to remember what its like to actually drive on it without sitting and sitting. And we eat out. Wherever and whenever we want, no reservations, no waiting, no....wait a minute, OK, so you got me there. So a few restaurants close in the winter, and many others arent open during the week. There is that. We had an orgasmic meal at FUSION Sunday night (half price entrees on Sunday... cant beat it!!) but were sad to hear they close at the end of November and dont re-open until April 2.
But those that do stay open? Many have luring specials in the off-season. At ADRIATICO (First & Baltimore), for example, theres a Buy One Entree Get One Free on Wednesday night, and on Thursday its Nostalgia Night, with prices from their 1978 menu. At the fabulous BANKING HOUSE INN (112 NW Front Street, Milford) every night theres a Prix Fixe menu if you get there between 5:00 and 6:30. For $15 you get an entree, soup, salad and dessert. Definitely put this exquisite restaurant on your itinerary. Back in Rehoboth, CLOUD 9 (234 Rehoboth Avenue) has half price pizza and pasta on Monday, and it seems PLUMB LOCO (10 N. First St.) has something going on just about every night.
There are also special events going on at restaurants in the off season. DINARDOS (330 Rehoboth Avenue) has a big Thanksgiving Gala Buffet and New Years Eve dinner, Cloud 9 has a benefit for the Michael Brossette Fund on November 29, and the CULTURED PEARL (19 Wilmington Avenue) has two month-long deals coming up. In December, after a hard day of holiday shopping, take your purchases to the restaurant, and as youre having dinner theyll wrap your gifts for you. Yes, there is a Santa Claus! And in January, its Introduce a Friend to Sushi Month. Just take someone to the restaurant who has never been there before, and you both get 25% off your tab! Is that great or what? I have found that every time I recommend Cultured Pearl to inquiring shoppers, I get one of two responses. Faces either light up in glee with "You have sushi here?" or faces grimace and noses wrinkle up. So lets match up some gleeful faces with you nose wrinklers and head on over to a great restaurant that serves much more than sushi.
But the reality is it is harder to find people here in the winter and harder to connect with the community. So I invite you all to come up with ideas of ways we can get together through the winter...bowling night, movie night, dinner, pot lucks, day trips, whatever you desire...and make up a small announcement and post it on Lambda Risings bulletin board so we all know about it. One of my favorite inspirational/healing writers is Sark, and she has a wonderful book called Inspiration Sandwich which has chapters devoted to stuff like Invite Someone Dangerous to Tea, Find Inspiring People, and Celebrate Every Gorgeous Moment. So lets create some dangerous tea meetings this winter with inspiring people and create an even better Rehoboth. Maybe we could organize a Share Your Dreams Night and see where we go with that.
As this is the last issue of LETTERS until February 1998, Ill be spending some time trying to come up with ideas for next years editions (yes, Im a Type AA personality, I cant stop it!). I already have a few fun ideas, and if you have any let me know as well. I was talking to our lawyer, John Brady, the other night and he had some great ideas for legal tidbits and legal advice that I want to introduce next year. I always think of John as "our lawyer" because he is such an asset to our community, not only here in Rehoboth but the entire state of Delaware, and if you ever need a lawyer, is there anyone else to call??
Until the next issue, have a safe and glorious holiday season.
