Corey Marshall-Steele sent us a poem last week called The Summer That Got Away (see page 22). I know what he means, I blinked and it was the Fourth of July; I blinked again and SUNDANCE was over. As my grandmother use to say, "Time flies when youre having fun." And if thats the case, this must have been a great summer. But then, she also use to say, "Time passes faster the older you get." That couldnt have anything to do with this, right? Right? Anyway, with all that blinking, Ive either got something in my eye, or Ive turned into Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie.
On page 6 Murray talks about SUNDANCE 97 so Ill leave it to him, except to say, WE SURPASSED OUR GOAL!raising $114,000 with some dollars still coming in. It was for me the most fun Ive had at SUNDANCE since the very first one way back in 1988 at The Strand. Most of the fun I had was because there were so many wonderful people helping us to put the thing together. I know Murray says thanks for both of us but I want to get my two cents worth in as well. There is a great sense of community that surrounds SUNDANCE. Official thank you letters will go out shortly, meanwhile, please know that I am thankful that I am part of a community with so many warm and generous people.
Remember that song with the line: "my head is in a spin, my feet wont touch the ground?" Thats the way I have felt after this past summer. Now, however, there is a little breathing space between deadlines, and there is more time for me to think about the direction CAMP Rehoboth needs to move in the next few years. More and more in conversations around the CAMP office we find ourselves talking about the need to develop into a Community Center. This summer Murray even suggested a retreat center, and weve laughingly talked about a retirement center for yearsonly the older we get the less we seem to laugh about it. Some things remain only dreams, others become the stuff of which the future is made. Of course we have to keep in mind the first rule of Sussex Countyall in good time. Its taken us seven years to get to this point. I wonder where the next seven years will take us.
In case you havent heard it yet, Red Letter Day has released a CD of their song, Until Then, which they wrote following the death of Paige Berdini. The song first heard at Paiges Memorial Serviceso moved everyone that the recording quickly followed. The CDs were on sale at SUNDANCE with a portion of the proceeds going to this years event, and they are still available. If you are interested, you can purchase the CD for $10 at either Cloud 9 or CAMP Rehoboth.
Signed, limited edition prints of Murrays 1997 SUNDANCE painting, Rainbow Revival II, are still available as well. Thanks to the efforts of SUNDANCE co-chair and sponsor, Sondra Arkin of ProMarket in Washington DC, the proceeds from the sale of these prints (as well as the ones from last year) will be donated to SUNDANCE. The prints are $45 each, or in case you missed last years, you can buy both for $75.
My office looks a bit like Grand Central Station with friends stopping by to catch up, visitors looking for advice, and folks coming by in an effort to put a face with a name theyve seen in LETTERS. And even though it gets hectic, I wouldnt have it any other way. That is what CAMP Rehoboth is all about. So even though the season is over, keep in touch. Write or email www.camprehoboth.com. Or better yet, plan to spend some time in Rehoboth throughout the fall and winter, and when youre in town, stop by for a visit.
