LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |

The way I see it is that winter is far too long, cabin fever is everywhere, and the extra ten pounds Ive gained in my gut isnt so easy to lug around in all this cold weather. In other words, Im thoroughly over the off-season. Even so, I must confesseven at the risk of sounding hypocriticalIm glad its February. Not because of the cute date I have for Valentines Day, but because I consider February to be the final hurdle to better, brighter days. Soon, very soon, things in Rehoboth will begin to change. I cant wait. Before I spill the beans on what the new season has in store for us, I must report that these past winter months have been packed with a variety of social events. Winter Party Week in Miami over Thanksgiving was only the beginning. Since then, theres been dozens of Christmas parties, birthday parties, circuit parties, and a handful of parties for no reason at all. The most entertaining party of the bunch (the one with the most gossip!) occurred in Rehoboth over New Years Eve on Maryland Ave. when a tribe of summer beach-goers arrived in town to learn that Manos had set ablaze the day before. It was determined that faulty wiring was the culprit, and luckily no one was hurt. However, extinguished along with the fire were nearly 200 dinner reservations, giving the would-be New Years Eve patrons a new reason to shake their rattles and blow their horns. Other news circulating at the Maryland Ave party was that two new bars had opened their doors in Rehoboth. The first, called Harlows a restaurant/bar owned by Cape Suites master Chuck Hyson. This news is true, and Harlows is doing quite well by holding a competitive happy hour from 4:00-8:00 p.m., and serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. The second barand this is BIG newsis called Double L. And if you are still wondering what that means, try this on for size: Levis and Leather! I just knew there was a reason to hold on to my chaps. Now, if the news of a new leather bar in Rehoboth has you anxious to get into a beach house, then make your way to Cobalt in DC, Sunday, February 8 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. for the fifth annual Beach House Rush Party. There you can find a nice group of boys or girls to shack up with all summer long, and you might possibly win one of the many generous door prizes provided by Rehoboth businessesBlue Moon, Cloud 9, At Melissas, Lighthouse Inn, Renegade, Rock Creek, Bad Hair Day?, The Body Shop Fitness, and Ricks Fitness & Health. If youre at the beach instead on February 8, stop by Cloud 9 for Out of the Ashes, a benefit party for Helen, Dan and Greg of Manos. Hosted by Century 21s Betty Mann, Jim McAlister, Sam Profetta, and CAMP Rehoboths Steve Elkins, the party is from 2:00-5:00 p.m. with a cash donation requested at the door. Manos is planning a grand re-opening April 1st. As the masses arrive in Rehoboth this May they will be introduced to CAMPsafe, a significant new endeavor of CAMP Rehoboth. An AIDS prevention/outreach project funded by a grant from the State Department of Health, CAMPsafe is geared toward gay men. Michael Cover is running the project for CAMP, and I am sure hell be recruiting volunteers. So offer your assistance if you can. With our help on projects like this, CAMP Rehoboth gets a bit closer to becoming the community center envisioned by Murray and Steve from the start. And, as CAMP and the community grow, so do we as people. Before I go, I want to wish everyone in Rehoboth a happy February. (That includes you, Luvysee, I didnt forget you). Its little more than a month until Spring, so hang in there. As I said, brighter days are on the horizon. Now, if only I could find my ab-roller! |
