Like death and taxes, one thing is certain each winter in Rehoboth. The Moving of the Stores. Its only February, but if youre like me youre already so confused. Where did everybody go? Well, heres a quick guide to the changing face of business in Rehoboth. First, the sad news. Peter Antolini closed his fabulous GOURMET BY THE SEA [37 Baltimore Avenue] in January. If you missed it, his last-day going-out-of-business sale put Filenes Bargain Basement to shame. It seemed everyone in town was there, carefully clanging around the packed store with baskets full of bottles and all those amazing specialty foods for which the store was famous. Peter, were really going to miss you, and the town is greatly diminished by your closing. Meanwhile, across the street, that ever-so-tasteful home decor and furnishings store, ACANTHUS, has moved into the Rehoboth Mews across from the COFFEE MILL (which just celebrated its first anniversary...congratulations, Steve and Wayne!). Phillip Livingston has moved his ELEGANT SLUMMING one door down from its former address at 33 Baltimore Avenue. Just a short move, but Phillip, such gorgeous space to show off those jewels! TRUE ESSENCE has moved around the corner from its former address at 29 Baltimore Avenue. Suparna is now set up in her big new digs at 4 North First Street, former home of Out Wear Gear, with her tantalizing personalized essences and aromatherapy. Of course, if shes there, that means OUT WEAR GEAR moved, too, and Rose can now be found in greatly expanded space at 111 Rehoboth Avenue, where Spirits by the Sea used to be. (Theyve moved to Mariners Square.) And, at the site of the former Chop Shop at 60 Baltimore Avenue, Bill Sievert and John Theis are opening another SPLASH store which will be about 70% contemporary casual clothing and active wear, plus watches, gift and home furnishings. They expect to be open in April. Welcome back to Rehoboth, guys! (Somehow, I knew you wouldnt be gone that long). In restaurant/bar news, for those of you who havent heard yet, MANOS [10 Wilmington Avenue] had a tragic fire on the night of December 30, in which the apartments over the restaurant were gutted and the restaurant itself was severely water and smoke damaged. The restaurants been closed since then, but Dan, Greg and Helen are now in the process of rebuilding and hope to be open by early April. Across town, JAKES SEAFOOD (First Street & Baltimore Avenue) is expanding into the spaces where Stone Heart and True Essence used to be, so the restaurant will now wrap around the corner from its First Street storefront. HARLOWS [404 Rehoboth Avenue] opened last fall and serves lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, and happy hour from 4 - 7 nightly. Also brand new as of New Years is the DOUBLE L, a leather/levi bar [622 Rehoboth, next to the Crystal Restaurant] If you have news for Business Beat (fashion tips, new merchandise, sales, or just want to see your name in print) dont be shy!
