LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |
Commentary by Steve Elkins, Editor |
How does the saying go, "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb?" Or is it the other way around? Who knows what March will bringwinter or springbut if the trees in the CAMP courtyard are any indication, spring has already sprung. Of course, just to prove me wrong, well probably have a record breaking blizzard next week. For some reason the Soothsayers line from Julius Caesar keeps echoing in my head. "Beware the ides of March." That sounds ominous, doesnt it? I guess that means if were going to have a storm it will be on March 15. But dont worry too much, Ive never been very good at making predictions. As Ive said before, the first sign of spring to me has for years been the reopening of the Blue Moon on Valentines Day Weekend. Of course the time that they are closed has changedit used to be Thanksgiving, now its New Years. The winters are getting shorter around here it seems. Anyway, its been eighteen years since the Blue Moon changed the face of gay life in downtown Rehoboth. I cant imagine not having the support of Joyce Felton and the staff of the Moon. From the founding of CAMP Rehoboth to SUNDANCE to World AIDS Day to just about every other project in the community, the Blue Moon plays an important part. Speaking of celebrating anniversaries, the Renegade is also eighteen years oldand the Nomad Village has been around longer than that! On the other hand, new places are springing up as fast as the daffodilsthis winter has added the Double L and Harlows. The way were going it sounds like were really living up to the Rehoboth slogan "room for all," or maybe we should say, "something for everyone!" As always, every spring seems to bring change to our community. Besides the usual fruit-basket-turn-over kind of thing that goes on in our business community every year, (and Im sure well have more about that later) there are changes on other levels as well. One of those changes involves the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC). David Patterson, the driving force and lay pastor of the local MCC for many years, is leaving to, as he says, "make room for the church to grow in new directions." The congregation at MCC will have a farewell meal for David after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, March 29, and invites those who wish to say their thanks to David for all he has done for our community. Good luck David! While Im on the subject of community, dont miss Glen Pruitts article on volunteers on page 24. Glen is serving on the selection committee for the 1998 Governors Youth Volunteer Service Awards, and gives us an interesting slant on what that means. At the same time he reminds us that we are approaching the season when volunteers are needed for a number of things at SCAC and CAMP Rehoboth, among others. Glens membership on a committee such as this shows what a fine job he is doing as Director of SCAC. In fact let me take this opportunity to say thanks to Glen and to his staff, Kathy Weir and Jackie Ignacio, for all the hard work they do at SCAC. So, no matter what this March is likea lion or a lambmay it be a great season. Happy St. Patricks Day, happy March, and a happy spring to all!
